Having a problem.. can't access secret storage area?

No matter when or how I talk to Tom Nook, he doesn't offer me to build/expand the secret storage.

Are there requirements? I'd rather not expand my house past the first room.

Also, you have to pay off your existing loan to be able to initiate the conversation. Pay it off and talk to him about expanding your room, and he will mention the secret storage room.

also, before anyone says anything, no you do not need to fully expand the house. you do need to expand it a little, i'm going to assume you need to get an upstairs room like cuddle said. but i know you don't need all the expansions because i've been watching vinesauce streams of the welcome amiibo update, where he started a new town and had the option to get the secret storage very shortly afterward.
i just wanted to say this because i previously thought you needed every expansion for the secret storage because i read that somewhere on here. so yeah.

I can confirm you need at least a second floor upgrade from Tom Nook. Once you've paid your loans for the second floor, he'll mention the secret storage as one of the upgrade options (it's under additional rooms, iirc) the upgrade costs 158,000 bells.

Basically, get a second floor room and he'll offer the storage as soon as you pay the loans!

Also, to access the storage room, it'll be on your bottom screen at your house on the right side of the light switch. It'll look like a shutter, tap it to access the storage.

And after the secret storage room, Lottie visits, and you're able to move your furniture HHD style! That'll put a little grid with squares on the touchpad too, to the left of the light switch. I'm so happy about this, cause it really fills out what I always thought was such an awkward empty space down there!
