i've spent well over 250nmt looking for rod or dobie and i've not found either, i'm starting to think i should just give up looking for them at this point
i've found villagers like sherb, reneigh, tia, fauna and all those loads of times, but i never seem to find anyone i actually want
so has anyone ever found who they were looking for or is this method just impossible??

Sorry you’re not having any luck. I don’t really have any dreamies so I just island hop until I find someone I want— I recently picked up both Lionel and Rocket from NMT islands in less than 10 NMTs each.
It sucks that you’re able to find the popular villagers so often compared to the ones you want which seem relatively unpopular. :/
I was hopping islands to find Kiki yesterday and the day before, on my last 7 tickets I decided to use one more, if I didn’t find her I was going to let the game pick the villagers to move in.
I managed to find Ankha! She’s not Kiki but will do for now - still unsure of how I feel about her
but I’ve ditched villagers like Judy a couple times, I’ve found Fauna before and also left Audie once too.
I find it so annoying when I want one specific villager. The game will refuse to give me what I want!
I think I'm like 40% lucky. I'm personally not too picky but the only time I got someone I wanted it was Megan and ironically it was a day or two after I was complaining about how underrated she is lmao.
Then the bad luck came in immediately and I randomly had plots filled with people I didn't really want.
Yeah for sure, of villagers I was looking for I found Prince, Kidd, Audie and Canberra but of high tier villagers Ive found Ankha and Lolly a few times as well as Bob, Marshall, Merengue and Fauna. But most of the time I find cows, gorillas or rhinos - species I have no interest in. I hope you find Rod or Dobie soon!
When I went island hopping starting the game, I wasn't really looking for any villager particularly, and just ones I found cute. With is how I ended up with villagers I never really knew about before, like Pekoe and Rodeo. That been said on my first 2 of the plots I bought after the forced camper I was blessed with two of my favs randomly. Found Bob on the fourth island one day, and the next day had Stitches on the first. For my 3 most recent villagers I just used the trading forums here with some amiibo card threads since I wasn't really hunting for any of the new 8.
Also nice to see someone else who really likes Rod! I had him in NL and got really attached to him, so when I remembered this site and found the trading forums I made sure to get him on my island! I'm not sure if your one for that but you could definity try the forums for Rod and Dobie! If not I wish you island luck and good sleep!
I found Judy on my seventh try, and I got some new villagers I like too. I’ve been really lucky island hopping, but also haven’t done it a lot yet, so my bad luck may still be coming lol.
So far my island hopping luck has been crazy good. When I go island hopping, I'm never firmly set on finding *that* dreamy, I'm simply looking for a good villager. Here is a list of every NMT I've ever used and who I've found on the islands:
1st ticket: Clyde (left)
2nd ticket: Poppy (took)
3rd ticket: Ketchup (took)
4th ticket: Hornsby (took)
5th ticket: Gayle (took)

I’ve never had any luck on the islands, I’d Im looking so someone in particular I will either trade or buy. When I’m island hopping I never run into anyone I like or want, so I usually take other routes.
I've not really done that much island hopping, and tbh I'm kind of afraid to because what if I use up all of my tickets and still don't find a villager I want?
A while ago I spent a few NMTs looking for a new villager for my island, and ended up finding Melba. I was super happy about not only having my favourite villager, but also the fact that I didn't have to spend loads of tickets to get her. I really doubt I'll be so lucky next time I go island hopping, though.
I'm trying to lower the chances of me being disappointed with who I end up with by not looking for one specific villager, but rather having quite a few villagers that I'd like to have on my island. I made a list of all the villagers I'd be happy to have on my island, and I thought it'd have about 20-30 villagers, but it turns out there's like 70 lol. Hopefully that means I'll have a good chance of finding a villager I like...
I obviously have better luck when I’m open to a small group of villagers I’d move in. My most recent successful hunt was me looking for any personality type, since it would be a duplicate for my island. I made it a hunt for June, Maddie, Sprocket, and a few others. In my heart I wanted June. I found June after 80 tickets and adopted her. Now I have a knock off cheap amiibo to use so I can scan her anytime. I love her.
Then there was the time shortly after this I moved Reneigh out to get rid of her starter interior. I ended up finding Judy again even though I moved her out because I got her picture. I like her a lot for being a creepy and cute weirdo so I l moved her back in. Shortly after I found an original Reneigh on here to adopt.
Found Audie with 4NMTs and Chief with 2NMTs, tbh it really is just based on luck and sometims RNG can be pretty sh** hope you find Rod and Dobie soon tho, sometimes I just settle for trading to save myself from frustration of island hopping
I haven't island hopped much but I've found it's better if I don't go with the mindset of I want only certain villagers and won't take any others. I went once like that, I wanted Molly,Stitches,Shep or Bob. On my 5th ticket I found a cute mouse named Bettina and passed on her because she wasn't one of those 4. I ended up not inviting anyone, getting stuck with a voided villager and serious regret for not taking Bettina. So after that I decided just go and see who's there and if it's a villager I really want great but if not and I find one I like I'll keep them and hope the others show up another time. I did go island hopping again last week with the new mindset and lo and behold on island number 7 I found Molly!
