Got confused when Tom Nook said to only back up when the system is damaged.

I wanted to check here before I do anything that could potentially ruin my safe file but when I wanted to back up my Island Tom Nook warned that it should only be done when the system is damaged.
Is there any specific reason for this? Should I just back up anyway?

The warning is that the backup can only be used if the system is lost/damaged. I.E. it can't be used to do things like transfer save files between two working systems (which is planned to be a feature later) or be used just on a whim.

You'll want to setup the backup now.

I believe he means you should only ACCESS the backup when the system is damaged. Basically, you're not supposed to just saved a backup and then restore it because you changed your mind about something you did to your island or a villager moved and you regret it. But you'd obviously need to actually have a backup in place before it's damaged.

Oh, yeah, that too 😅

Okay great. Thanks for clarifying.
At first I assumed I'd be able to move my data over to a different console even if the original one wasn't damaged as I was thinking of eventually upgrading to the AC Switch from my Lite so that threw me off a bit.

I'm not entirely sure how it works but I'd recommend only doing it if you already have problems with your Switch or whatever. Seems pretty pointless otherwise.

I did it on the off chance it happens to break. I'm always super paranoid about electronics breaking, so it makes me feel better to know that, IF something bad happens, I have back-up!

yeah it confused me too but i looked up articles about it and it’s just so that in the case that it happens, you have your data saved

i would actually recommend otherwise! because if your switch suddenly breaks you won’t be able to back it up then. it’s best to have back ups before hand. also when you set it up it does it automatically when youre not playing :)

I've seen scary scenarios in which a save file is corrupted. If that happens, can you still use the backup, even if the Switch itself isn't damaged?

This is bad advice, sorry. The reason you have insurance is to protect you in case something happens. Doing a backup costs nothing other than two minutes of your time to set it up at the outset, and all it takes is one console crash or drop or theft or major glitch and you’ll be thanking the heavens you did. Why would you ever not protect yourself, especially when the effort required is barely more than choosing not to do it?

I have backed up anyway.
I just wish it gave us the option to do data transfers between systems regardless of whether the older system fails or what not.

I’ve backed mine up too as soon as I saw the option I did. Maybe I’m paranoid but I swear I keep seeing this white line that goes across the screen at the bottom.

I bought a switch lite.. and i'm scared to death the joy stick is gonna crap out. Really shoulda spent extra on the switch.

They're giving it later this year!

Oh, dear, can that happen 😟 I got a Lite because my Switch stopped recognizing the joy-cons when I attached them... Everyone said "Get a pro controller!" apparently not caring that I ONLY use it in handheld mode and was clear about that.

Well i know ppl say it happens.. and if it does, well... that's curtains. 😵

I've never heard of it... I Googled it (I'm super paranoid) but mainly found articles on joy-con drift (is it... is it possible to search ANYTHING Switch related and not find those articles?). So I'm guessing, if it does happen, it's not very common. But, then again, I didn't find anything when my Switch stopped recognizing the attached joy-cons.

So, I guess it doesn't matter which you get- there's always a risk some random fluke will come around and kill it. But I feel better knowing my game is backed up!

Switch Lite's can get joycon drift so badly, AC is unplayable. I got a used Switch Lite with it and I haven't been able to use it at all! Might as well have broken joycons.

Oh, wow, that sucks! I've never had joy-con drift at all so I didn't know it could get that.

And, to be clear- it was NOT the joy-cons that were broken. It was the Switch itself. I bought replacement joy-cons before discovering it was broken 😒 I tried to use it again a little while ago but the joy-cons are dead and can't charge... so I can't play it at all unless I get a pro controller, which would mean I'd have to play it as a home console, which I have zero interest in doing.

HOPEFULLY my current Lite holds up. I think a lot of these problems are rare, but that doesn't help when you're the one dealing with it 😕

Oof that sucks! I think there is a stand or controller that will charge the joycons themselves you can try to look into? Both that used Lite and my Switch both got drift (It's apparently pretty much all original consoles that got it from what I read? Or maybe just common? There was a lot of articles like you said LOL) and they usually fix it for free but I'm not sure they're open at the moment. I had to buy a new set of joycons to play AC in March because of it!

Yah, I might look into it at some point... I'd definitely love a second console to have a second island 😝
And, yah, I think any console can get drift. But I've been "lucky" with mine.

I've made do with less than ideal systems before... I spilled fruit punch on my Gamecube I think within a year after getting it. So the top of the disc drive was hard to open... except when it would randomly pop open. In the middle of a game. Including Animal Crossing. Resetti HATED me 😂 But I made it work because I refused to admit to my dad that I broke it, lol. I would leave heavy objects on top of it to keep it closed. Then the cord would knock them off. And I'd swear. A LOT.
Good times.
