Why do people prefer ungifted villagers?

I recently just adopted Chrissy and she was gifted a different shirt but when she moved to my island she was in her original clothing. Is this suppose to happen?

People prefer ungifted villagers because they will keep all of their original furniture and clothing. They can still wear their original clothing, but eventually you will probably see them wearing the gifted shirt. You can also see gifted furniture items too in their home. The best way thing I've found to gift villagers is assessed fossils (especially if you completed your fossil collection!). They are high value items, are never placed in a villager's home as furniture, and all of the villagers love them. I give them wrapped so that I get more points. It's a great gift to give!

Thank you for the info!

Items from previous owner carries over. I adopted Zucker with a flea displayed and Cranston with three bugs displayed. Also gotten Octavian with a dress. So yeah...

Of course!! Glad to help :D I hope that more people give assessed fossils! It's so useful. I'm surprised it's not as popular!

The assessed fossils? I'm pretty sure it counts as furniture. Just because they don't display doesn't mean it doesn't go into their furniture store.

I don't know of a villager that has a 2x2 empty room marker but if you give them the 1x1 fossils they might display it on their surfaces or on the floor.

I've given those 1x1 fossils, and they don't get displayed! My friends and I have given tons of fossils collectively to our villagers, and they haven't gotten displayed based on our experiences. :)

Even if they don't display the fossils, they might start taking down furniture if you give them too many. Has this happened at all?

It depends on the fossil and if the home has a valid marker for the fossil placement. Amber will get display if it's a valid surface. So any of the bigger one will go into their furniture storage. I wouldn't be surprise if some of the original furniture disappear after you give them 30+ assessed fossils.
Other ones are: ammonite , archaeopteryx , australopith , coprolite , dinosaur track , shark-tooth pattern , trilobite

Ahh! I see! I was reading into that to try to understand what Sharksheep's comment was trying to get that. People haven't mentioned anything like that happening, but I haven't gifted >32 fossils to them yet to find out! I guess this is in reference to the wall lamp debacle.
