So, I have Genji in my Wild World town and have had them for years. I always remembered Genji being the GIRL jock. Jocks are boys in the game so it naturally confused me, but Genji's name had the pink bubble, they looked feminine, and their voice was high pitched like a girl's voice would be. I got New Leaf about a month ago and remember stumbling upon the fact that Genji was now a boy. I remember checking my old WW town and saw that Genji still had the pink bubble behind their name. I laughed it off because I always hated Genji and I really didn't care what gender they were. Just a few minutes ago I got the random urge to check and see what the ACNL community had to say about Genji's gender change. I figured there would be funny posts considering that's a huge change and Genji is somewhat popular. I looked and long story short found no trace of Genji ever being a girl. I just checked my WW town and Genji now has a BLUE bubble surrounding his name and a deeper voice... I never hacked and did not get Genji from someone's town as I had no friends (lol). I have no explanation for the pink bubble that I saw for so many years besides Genji must have just being going through an identity crisis lol! Hopefully my experience with Genji's temporary sex change will make you smile.

When I was little, I solidly remember a particular scene in The Lion King differently. You know the part where Simba and Nala are frolicking around the jungle oasis, leaping across the rocks in the river and being lovey dovey? I still, to this day, remember Nala falling in the water and Simba laughing at her and pulling her out, in that exact scene. It wasn't until years later that I rewatched it, that I got confused. It didn't happen like I remembered it
I feel like later, Simba fell into the water as they drank from it, and Nala laughed. I said to myself, "This isn't right!!!!"

Memory is a strange thing. Of course, with animal crossing's track record of changing sexes and personality changes -- I mean, Dobie got changed from lazy to cranky for no apparent reason other than he looks like an old man I guess?? -- so I wouldn't be surprised if Genji used to be a girl. I have no idea! But it is a bit funny, and I hope my story made you smile, too.

Now I'm imagining Bam as transgender and it's super cute, btw.

There are a lot of villagers I "see" as one gender when they're another gender, I see Tangy as a boy. And Julian I can see as either a girl or boy. I like to think Gracie is a boy as well, because well, he's a boy in the original Japanese game, somehow they thought us English people wouldn't be able to handle a femme fashion designing giraffe man.

There are a lot of villagers I "see" as one gender when they're another gender, I see Tangy as a boy. And Julian I can see as either a girl or boy. I like to think Gracie is a boy as well, because well, he's a boy in the original Japanese game, somehow they thought us English people wouldn't be able to handle a femme fashion designing giraffe man.

You're actually not alone in seeing Tangy as a boy. I thought she was male until I talked to her in Happy Home Designer and realized what her personality type was. It came as a shock, to be honest.

I know what you mean. I remember being all confused upon learning that Pate is a girl... there's absolutely nothing even remotely feminine about her, so it was confusing for me to hear her say peppy lines in the squeaky voice.

And it's not like I dislike characters that are somewhat unconventional for their gender, in fact it's something I usually like (such as with Vladimir being a cranky pink bear, and Rocket being a super-heroine with a buff build), but it's different when I can't even tell they're supposed to be one or the other. If that makes sense...

I never had Genji in any towns until New Leaf, so I never experienced that. I think the only gender swap/surprise I experienced was when I first found out Gracie was male in the Japanese game. But I realized I wasn't really that surprised shortly after. Seems like a minor censorship Nintendo would do for the international release.

I don't really feel like gender matters in Animal Crossing, especially since it's an all ages game where nobody dates anybody. So I never really pay too much attention to what gender an animal is supposed to be.

I agree 100%! I love the unconventional ones. Pate confused me as well! Felyne definitely seemed like a peppy villager to me for some reason and Pippy looks like a lazy boy.

I always thought Sahara was a girl but I recently noticed her name bubble is blue and her voice sounds like a smug male. However, I distinctly remember Hazel referring her to "chick" once.

Well, she WAS a guy in the Japanese version... Probably forgot to recolor the speech bubble and nametag. Perhaps it was changed because of the eyelashes, or because Sahara(h) was the best pun they could come up with, or because all of the wandering NPCs (at the time, anyways) are male in Japan...

Ohhh interesting. I didn't know! Are there any other NPCs in New Leaf whose gender changed? Was Joan a male? o_o

I think that when AC:GC came out, Joan was the only female traveler... Gracie was changed due to his/her flamboyancy, but that's the only other one I know of...

That's the one! Pippy... I knew there was also a bunny whose gender confused the heck out of me but I couldn't quite remember her.

But yeah. Nintendo shoulg get their act together when it comes to designing characters. Not being able to tell their gender is kind of a problem, especially in a game where most of their characterisation is based on their aesthetic.


Though speaking of Genji, he was also pretty confusing for me, but for a different reason. My first and only AC game is New Leaf, and I had him as one of my starting villagers in my first town ever a few years ago. And... I had no idea he was supposed to be a rabbit! I didn't quite know the game yet, I didn't know that the villagers all had to be one specific real-life animal, and his colour scheme looked IDENTICAL to one of the evolved forms of the Tamagotchi creatures... so to me for the longets time he was just a... thingie. An invented animal. Certainly not a bunny...

Gaaaahhh Genji. He will always be the villager I dislike the most out of them all. I know he has some fans, but we just got off to a bad start, so to speak. And even now I generally try to avoid ones with oriental-themed houses.
