ok! you should go to the Home screen on your switch and click the little icon on the top left. if you scroll down a little using the left stick you will get to the "Add Friend" section, where you can see users you've played with, search for local users, or search with friend code.
you'll probably prefer to enter a friend code, since it's the most common for adding online friends! ask your pal for their switch code (which you can see in the "Profile" section) or give them yours, and you're done!

on visiting other islands: the airport in game will open after two days i believe, then you can talk to Orville, who will explain the whole deal to you. i hope this helps !
