That can't be right, I've gotten several different color variations from my nook's of the same items.

Same. I've gotten a few color variations of rattan, antique and cute furniture from Nook's. Although it's VERY rare.

I’ve gotten multiple variations of an item in Nooks Cranny—the fax machine in pink and brown for sure, diner items, the gray and green toy box (the other color toy box started showing up after a balloon or tree item I think but not all of the other item variations were). So I don’t think it’s as locked down as Nook Miles items are. I’ve also seen my Nooks with three or four of the rice cooker items, but I know I picked some up on other islands first so that could have influenced the store’s availability.

there was a thread once where a bunch of people mentioned getting multiple variations of the same item on their nook store, but i've never had this happen. it's always the same color for me

I have 4 of the gnomes - I could have sworn that I bought two different ones at Nook's or one might have been the special item you can obtain at the ATM (or your phone) - it's been a sure and I didn't really pay much attention then. I got two more from either a balloon or a tree.

Honestly sounds like rotten luck on your guy's end instead of a mechanic. I got a red Imperial decorative shelves today when previously I've been getting brown variations of that set.

(I don't do as much online trading, most of my stuff has been local trades with my family, so it's pretty easy to get what you are looking for even without paying for NSO, provided you have a friend who likes animal crossing. I'm lucky enough that my mom, dad, and brother play.)
