I did it a lot of times with my 3DS, and that played a role in me losing it later. I did the same thing with my second 3DS but made sure to keep my eye on it.
Nowadays, I like to bring my Switch with me when we're going somewhere. I might have to stop doing that, though, because I feel like someone will see me with my Switch and they'll think I'm childish.
