The other day I walked into ReTail and found Biskit there. Biskit really needs a ranch armchair, and I had one, but it wasn't up in ReTail yet. I placed it there, but I couldn't get him to ping to purchase it. Is the game really programmed so that the villagers will only buy items that were already there when they came in? I eventually gave up and mailed it to him, but I was surprised. I just haven't had the right items handy to test on another villager - I usually keep ReTail too expensive so that they don't put random items in their homes.

I never thought of this possibility, Normally my villagers will ping for what I want them to buy; but that sounds quite annoying if they don't Ping about something you'd like to put in their homes ;_; Sometimes it takes me extra time to get them to ping about a certain item, I know ignoring them or saying they should not buy the item has caused forced pings on another item; perhaps it is all luck?

What you can do is talk to that villager so it's facing towards the item you want, then push him/her past it until they 'ping'. It's a nearly foolproof way for them to buy anything that has a decent price.

Never thought to do this, definitely going to be doing this when I get some furniture for each villager that I want to give furniture to:)

I do this with Benjamin everyday. Sometimes he doesn't want to buy an item that I set out so I make him ping for the one next to it, reject that, and then push him to the item I want him to buy and he buys it. Sometimes he doesn't want to and so I just save and continue or go out and back in, which would reset the choices I guess? But it works and he pings :)

Yes, they won't buy something unless it's already in the store when they come in. Even if you use the "push them in front" trick, they won't ping on an item if you just put it there.

I have no idea why :/

Also, villagers will only buy things from Re-Tail if you let them (after they've pinged), so there's no need to "keep ReTail too expensive so that they don't put random items in their homes." They can't buy Re-Tail items when you're not in the store.

^^

I do this if I see an item they sell at Re-tail and they happen to walk in. I just buy their item and put it up again at a much cheaper price. (though to be honest I feel like they ping so much more often for other villager's items. :()

Perhaps, but I've never failed with a reasonably priced item that was already in the store when they came in. But maybe I gave up too soon?

Yes, I've had a lot of success - back when I needed the bells I sold them anything! It's just this one item that I placed after the villager was already in that didn't seem to work....

Yes, but you might need to have the furniture already in ReTail before they come in. At least that's what I'm trying to figure out here.

And can I make sure - you do get him to buy an item that you set out after he comes into ReTail?

Well, that's a bit of folklore I've heard everywhere. Part of it is keeping ReTail full so they don't remove items from their homes too, of course. But I went straight from pushing them to buy items to preventing them from buying items, so I never really tested leaving items in ReTail and not encouraging them to buy.

This sounds like exactly what I want to do, so I will try again when I get a chance. I did try a few times and exit and reenter. I ignored their pings on previous items rather than denying them though, so I'll try that too.

I usually send them by mail but it doens't mean that they will put it.
I don't even put anything to sell on re-tail anymore apart from Gems which they always buy for a high price and they don't use them as decoration.
It's way easier just to send them an item by letter.

Yes, that's what I end up doing. And I usually wait till after they have invited me over so that I can take something out of their homes just before. The odds are really high that they'll fill the recently emptied space with the new item from the letter. That's what I was planning when I ran into Biskit at ReTail, and I thought ReTail would be a shortcut to the same result.

Yup, I usually set up the item after villagers come in. Today I did it, I had a sloppy lamp that appeared in the police station and I was selling stuff, then he popped into re-tail. I set up the flea market for the lamp and then brought everything else that was displayed and pushed him to the lamp and he pinged for it. :)

Thanks! I won't give up so easily next time!

I buy their items in Re-Tail, then put them back on the shelf so the original villager can buy it. So it sits there until they come in or until they ask for furniture. If it's the latter, I just snap it up and give it to them. The four wall spaces I let my villagers use, while the four floor spaces are for my coffee beans. 7500 bells a pop. Shoving them to buy your item is the best thing since kitty litter. ;D
