^ It's called tax. UK's got the highest VAT in Europe, I think. US is really weird about VAT (by everyone else's standards) - some states not having it at all, some having a tiny amount, everyone putting tax on AFTER the purchase price. Here it's already factored in to the price and because the rate is so high it puts all the prices up.
