Few questions about town visiting

Hi I don't want to get anything wrong so I thought I'd ask about town visiting
What are the benefits to town visiting do you unlock anything? Or is it just to be able to see what other people's towns look like and let them see yours?
How do I add friends and visit each others towns?
Also, if you visit someone who has one of the special visitors in their town are you also allowed to visit them?

Let me try to answer all of these
Essentially visiting towns don't earn you anything per-say but it can help you in the following:
- Sometimes when their villager is moving out you can convince the villager to come to your town!
- Sometimes villagers from your town would ask you to get signatures from other towns; but I am not sure what this does.

To add friends: If you are in game, press the home button on your 3DS, and at the top of your menu there should be an orange smiley face button and that is where you access all your friends!

I am not sure about the visitor question but basically if you open your gate you allow your friends to visit, and vice versa.

You earn the ability to change the physical appearance of the train station (you can choose between Fairy tale, Modern or Zen) after having 100 visitors in your town.
