i hate feminism that ignores other peoples problems...like some solutions might help a white woman, but if a black woman did the same thing she would get mocked. i also hate feminism that ignores these people and brushes them under the rug and only focuses on women like them. you dont get to silence other women and claim that youre fighting for all women.

I can't really speak for the feminists worldwide. I can say as much as I want an entirely equal society where men and women, white and black, LBGTQ people and heterosexuals have the same rights and can live a life without discrimination. The majority of the feminists would agree with me.
I consider myself a feminist and one that supports intersectional feminism. I think deciding what is radical or not is arbitrary, being that even an objectively moderate position could make someone else rave about the decline of society. There are reasonable and unreasonable positions in any movement and all one can really do is support what they find reasonable and necessary and refute what's harmful, and that's what I focus on.

The "radicals" of the group feel like the PETA of feminism. So extreme that they're off-putting. Unfortunately, a lot of people think that's what normal feminism is like. It's so sad it's almost funny. Some feminists are so extremely bent on progress that their attitude counteracts what feminism is really about.
If the more rational feminists would be willing to identify themselves as such, I feel like maybe the perception of feminism in the eyes of those who don't get it has a chance of changing.

Also, it's quite a bit of a hasty assumption to assume that.
Personally, I believe in equality for everyone, and that's why I didn't want to identify as a feminist anymore. They've done plenty of things that cannot be thought of as good in the past forty years.

No, because according to the definition, a feminist is a person that wants equality. If you want equality, you're a feminist.
It's also thanks to feminism that women have the rights to vote in most countries, the right to get an education and even the rights to make your own decision and not to be seen as a possession of the husband. The most people, and I guess even some feminists, were racist and homophobic in the 1900's. Today, 2014, we think different.

the thing is i get that youre saying you either like equality or not, but you shouldnt force the label on people. myself and others have expressed why they dont feel comfortable saying theyre a feminist because of its history. doesnt mean we hate it though
No, of course not, I'm not forcing anyone to call themselves feminists, I just think it's time to welcome the word as something positive again. That was the point of making this thread, to inform people about what the meaning of feminism is today.

I do not identify as a feminist for several reasons. Mainly because there are many issues that are not alike, whether in situations or from person to person. I just feel like you can't group everything and everyone and all issues and solutions together, it shouldn't work like that. Every problem is different and should be tackled and handled differently. I just feel like all these labels and groupings for and against various causes are only serving to segregate people further, not bring them together, and certainly are not creating an equal environment. Does this make any sense? I'm sorry if I'm not quite clear, I don't like to engage in these sorts of discussions often.
a lot of those rights were earned by screwing over woc and lgbtq+ women. and surprisingly, people talk about intersectional feminism but that does not mean it is the case of all or even the majority of feminists now. if you look at most high profile feminists, they are white, at least middle class, and still focus on the things that would benefit themselves even though there are many woc who don't agree and who find these things damaging.
the idea that because it's 2014 and people think differently is ridiculous because if that were true, there would be no racism or homophobia or transphobia and yet it's still everywhere.
also a lot of people are uncomfortable with the term feminist because of its roots and because of how it's still very white, so telling people they are inherently feminist for certain beliefs is really rude.
I don't get the people who are anti feminist on tumblr and whatnot. Like... you're literally saying you don't want equality by labeling yourself as that.

I'm not defending anything bad the feminist movement has done in the past. I can imagine they excluded some groups of people, especially in America. I'm just saying that the true modern feminist today is someone who wants full equality in the society which includes everyone.
I'm a feminist. I have received a lot of crap by saying that. People have been "insulting" me by calling me a girl (like that's an insult) and assume that I'm gay just because I'm a male feminist.

I'd like to say first that when you said on the first page that not identifying as a Feminist means you don't believe in equality for women, this statement is purely false. There are a number of reasons why people don't liketo use this term sometimes and quite a few of them are not for the detriment of the female gender. Feminists who argue this need to stop it.
I don't use the term "Feminist" on myself because I prefer "Humanist". While it's true that the term has not always been used as meaning advocating the equality of all human beings, it recently has adopted this meaning to some people, myself included. The meaning of many words changes throughout time, afterall. I do believe that women's rights should be equal to those of men, and the same to all peoples. I simply prefer a different term.

Just look at the definition of feminism (by Oxford dictionary): feminism is the advocacy of women's rights on the ground of the equality of the sexes. So, no, you don't have to call yourself a feminist if you believe in equality, but technically you are one. But I'm not stubborn, call yourself whatever you want.
I call myself a feminist instead of simply a humanist because I think the government (not only in my country, but in all countries) needs deal the inequality in the society and men's violence against women. I feel like this issue is not taken seriously today.
