My main house is the only one I paid off because I was expecting some kind of achievement for it. It was a let down to only get free house customizations for free for paying it off (especially since there aren't enough options for customizations IMO) but I gladly paid the fee for the extra storage. I have had to clean out my storage so many times because I ran out of room, and I have two other characters and use their storage as well. It is nice to have the extra slots...would be nice if we could keep buying 800 extra at that price as many times as we wanted with no cap.

I don't think they ever stated it would be with the last house payment. The users on here that mentioned it previously were just recommending to pay off your last home loan in case that was a prerequisite.
At some point, even if not currently, currency in the game becomes stagnant..so it's a way for people to spend their currency ultimately.

it did say in the message that they send your in-game mailbox that it was available for purchase to those with fully upgraded homes. so no, i don't think it's a glitch and it's their intention to have it be a purchase-able option.
I have no idea why it would be free? Also, IDK about you, but after paying off my loans... I literally have nothing else to spend bells on. So 500k is a bargain as far as I'm concerned.
Also, I hate how everyone gets so mad at Nook. Let's not forget this is a man who does work on your home and never, EVER bothers you for payments. You can literally never pay. He doesn't mind. If anything, he's a well-meaning but not very effective businessman. He even invited you to a new island and/or town AND NEVER BOTHERED TO CHECK IF YOU HAD ANY MONEY TO PAY HIM. I mean, the only "punishment" for not paying is he won't do more work on your home. But if you think he should be doing free work on your home when you haven't paid his debts... how are you gonna call HIM the greedy one? If anything, he's nickel and diming you for more work because he's trying to make up for his lack of forethought.

I would pay any amount plus more bells if it meant having even more storage!! lol 500,000 bells seems like a great steal to me considering they could have charged way more and I still would have thrown all my bells at Tom Nook. Take all my bells!! Good thing bells are not hard to come by!
like other ppl have said, it was never stated anywhere that the upgrade would be for free. i think u somehow managed to confuse the free customization you can do when you fully pay off your house with the storage, or u somehow mashed the two together.
tbh i thought it would cost more than 500,00 bells and that we'd have to get a loan for it, but u wont hear me complaining with what we got. i havent paid off my final loan yet, but ive also not gotten too close to filling my storage. when i finish paying off my house and get the upgrade, i can probably keep whatever clothes i want without feeling bad, but i imagine even then that i wont fill up my storage. but u never rly know until it happens.

It's not a bug. I have fully paid loans and it still costed 500,000 bells. I don't think they ever stated it would be free. Greedy Tanooki just wanted our bells.

Not everyone does turnip exchange or grind for bells. Some people might be new to the game and not know how to make bells efficiently.

I don't do turnips either. I'd say half of that is casual play, the other half was probably from getting tarantulas from Nook Mile Islands.
EDIT: Oh yes, I remember, a good amount of that was from peacock butterflies.

AHHH that is true! I'm still not personally affected by this, because I obviously don't want to get on the raccoon's bad side lol.

500k seems to be pretty cheap. I've had a lot of bells when I sold turnips early on and fully upgraded 3 player houses and still have over 10mil leftover to move buildings nonstop;. I've been casually earning bells by selling the various items villagers gift me and all the extra critters I've been catching to complete the museum. Diving is a pretty good way to earn bells without breaking your tools.

Never heard anywhere that this storage upgrade would be free. So it's not a bug, it's just the way it is. Nothing ever comes free from Tom Nook anyways o.o
