So, today during my lunch break, I was browsing Amazon's Nintendo 3DS games, when I found Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millennium Girl.

I'm still not sure what it is exactly (a first person dungeon crawler, apparently?), but it got my attention because it had very good ratings, even though it was referred to as a niche game. It looks interesting, actually, but I thought I'd ask if anyone here has played this and if yes, what you think about it. :)

I'm currently downloading the demo, by the way, and I'll probably try it this weekend. I'm curious whether I'll like this or not, because from what I understand, it's definitely something I have never played before (but hey, first time for everything, right? ;)).

No one here who knows or plays Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millennium Girl? Seems like this game is indeed very niche, then. ;)

I'm still waiting for my physical copy. :(

Etrian Odyssey is actually my favorite game series. I've played 1-4 (Untold is a remake of the first game), and I can say it deserves the good ratings. It is a first person dungeon crawler, and a huge part of it is drawing your own map on the touchscreen. And it's hard. :) It has three difficulty options though, so it shouldn't be frustrating (unless that's what you want ;) )

The demo only lets you play in story mode, which has five premade characters. The full version will also have a classic mode that's closer to the original version (you cand create up to 30 characters, but don't have access to the two story-exclusive classes).

I'd say try out the demo and see if you like it. I've always thought the first game looked boring until my mom got it for me, and I loved it from the very first moment. :D

(I'm better at answering specific questions, so feel free to ask me anything you want to know.)

Well, I've played the demo a bit (1 hour and 20 minutes) and I'm having mixed feelings about it, to be honest. :(

First, I don't like that you can't save whenever you want and that you have to return to the Inn. I can understand why, but I'm so used to being able to save and quit my other games whenever I want to finish playing, that here I feel that I have to keep playing, because otherwise I'll lose my progress. :(

I don't know if it makes a difference what option you choose when the game presents you with a question? I got asked if I wanted to reveal the information I had and I wasn't sure what to answer (I decided to do so and apparently that was the 'correct' choice?). But, given that this is Story-mode, I'm guessing there isn't a whole lot you can do 'wrong', so to speak.

As for the battle mechanics, I'm not sure I'm really understanding them. Well, I get that you can attack, defend, use skills, heal or what not, but there were several times that a battle began, a character attacked and just like that, the battle was over. Maybe that's only in the very beginning when those two high-level characters accompany you, but I was kinda 'Give me a chance to fight myself, okay?!'. For the battles, I've been spamming the Attack-button, though. I'm guessing more strategy will be required later into the game (it's somewhat reminding me of Fire Emblem: Awakening in a way, though that's my first strategy game ever and I really should continue playing that one... but I digress).

Mapping the first floor was quite fun, though. :) But exploring the second one got rather repetitive and well... I hesitate in saying 'boring', but it was probably a good thing I found Frederica so quickly, because I'd probably have lost interest quite rapidly (that and I wanted to stop playing, but I couldn't because no save-option at that point).

When I think about it, I'm pretty sure that this is a game I cannot play for long periods of time because it will hurt my eyes and give me a headache. That is NOT saying anything about the graphics, because those are actually very good! Just that because the images are well... repetitive (for lack of a better word), it causes me to have a headache (that would be a minor one, by the way, I'm not taking about a migraine or anything here).

There's also the fact that the game seems to be talking to you with the whole "You hear a sound" and "What will you do?" and what not. Not something I'm used to, that's for sure.

But, despite all that, somehow I find this game to be rather... fascinating. It's definitely unique (well, it's a niche game, of course) and I think I'll continue playing the demo for a while (30 uses for the demo is very nice, by the way). I'll see how things go and if I start liking this game better/more, but at this point I don't see myself buying it.

Even so, I'm actually glad I downloaded the demo and tried the game. I like discovering new things and while this game might not be my cup of tea, it's definitely different. :)

I've played this game and I really like it. The mapping gets a little old but as long as you mark the walls and doors you can just fill in the rest of the map floor with color even if you've never walked there before. You can even mark special spots on the ground with a variety of mapping icons which is great for remembering where things are! The game is, in my opinion, really fun and I loved the story. This is a first person dungeon crawler which means you don't get to see your characters unless they are in conversation or battle and you will be spending a majority of your time in dungeons which progressively get harder and more beautiful. Sometimes you have to grind out a few levels before taking on the harder dungeons but it really isn't that bad. Even still, strategy is your friend so be sure that you read what the moves your characters use do and spec them accordingly if you choose to get this game :)

This should be a demo thing though. Every game except for the first had a temporary save function, I doubt they removed it for this game.

I don't think those choices matter, aside from some minor dialogue differences. I didn't share information and apparently there wasn't anything wrong with that. :) Choices do matter for the little events in the dungeon though.

That's one of Ren's skills. So unless she joins you again later, you don't need to worry about it. :) (I don't really like having high-level characters help you out in the beginning, but I guess Expert mode would be pretty much impossible with just one character...) There's not really much strategy to the battles in the beginning (other than kill it before it kills you), but that will change later. If it's anything like the other games, your skill setup actually has a bigger influence on your progress than levels or equipment.

If the mapping in general bothers you, you can have the game fill in floors and walls for you and only put the icons. As Kaiaa said, you don't have to walk everywhere. :) It's really up to you how much detail you put in.

It's really not a game for everyone. If you enjoy it, it's (probably) very good. If you don't, that's totally understandable. :D

Figured I'd bump an existing thread rather than make a new one. Forgive me if thats not the proper thing to do.

I downloaded the demo for this the other day and I finally got to try it out...I think I'm in love. I'm a detail-oriented person, so I absolutely LOVE the map drawing aspect. I've been mapping out even the tiniest details just as an excuse to fill out the map and make it more awesome.

I think I'm gonna buy the game at some point and maybe check out the rest of the series (this would be my first one).

Ah yeah, I'd completely forgotten about this game. I ended up deleting the demo, actually. After my last post here I've played it some more, but it just wasn't my cup of tea. I'm still glad I tried it, though. :)
