How do you keep those ten slots? I have nine envelopes I've saved from villager letters and one open spot. I keep my tools in the first eight, in order of easiest to grab/often used: (1) shovel, watering can, fishing rod, net, megaphone (not often used) (2) axe, slingshot, stationery. The ninth is an open letter, so I can tuck remade items/purchased things away and not have them get swiped by villagers on my way home. The tenth spot is left empty, for when I get my mail, want to send a letter, or a villager asks me to bury a time capsule.

I hate carrying things in the pocket slots, unless I'm actively using them, because I usually grab the wrong thing. For instance, tarantula hunting, the only thing in my pocket is the net. I still get bitten, but at least I have the correct tool! ;)

I was just thinking about this the other day! I have three towns and keep my tools in my letter slots, and I try to keep the order as similar as possible. Fishing rod, net, shovel, megaphone, and slingshot take up the first five slots in that order, and the second row varies a little. Sixth and seventh can be watering can/axe/wetsuit/extra umbrella/accessory/empty space. Eighth is saved for an umbrella, ninth is bubble wand, tenth is throwing beans.
I really should get in the habit of keeping an empty letter slot, it's kind of a pain to have ten letters and items in each when you want to send/receive mail!

I use 5 of the letter slots for tools that are not used as often. The first slot is my silver axe, second is stationery, third is slingshot, fourth is golden axe, fifth is wetsuit. I keep the bottom five slots open for mail. I tend to get a lot of mail, so it would be inconvenient if I had fewer slots than that available. I always keep my fishing rod, bug net, watering can and shovel in my pocket for quick access.
