I started playing last year and I've recently got back into it - decided to start DMing using a virtual tabletop which has completely changed the game!
I absolutely adore it but unfortunately I don't know a lot of people who are into it. I definitely think it's got more popular over the years thanks to Stranger Things/Critical Role but I'm just curious how many people here are into it?
Not me, but one of my online friends played it almost religiously to the point it was what they discussed a lot of the times. I think the pandemic caused a lot of people to join hobbies like this and that's pretty cool! Especially since it was a way for others to connect and do something creative with their mind and involving others.
I would've probably joined their groups if I had the time, but unfortunately that time wasn't very great for me and I was overworked to the point of having two shifts per day. I never want to get to that point again lol.
I used to find roleplays on forums fun, but I haven't done those in ages and I'd imagine D&D and anything similar would be just be as fun. Some of them didn't interest me since it was a lot of shipping and just tacky romance that almost pushed it too far, but there was always a handful of gems that I'd find through the garbage with great stories, interesting characters, and fun people to be around!
I've never played but my high school had tons of kids who were into it. This was a long time ago. But yeah, they played in the cafeteria before first period every morning and during lunch sometimes. There was a lot of overlap with Magic the Gathering too.
I've never played and am unsure whether I ever will.
I've watched campaigns people have played on YouTube/Twitch over the years and thought it might be fun to play someday. I even have some friends who play, a couple of them being DMs. That said, I always get overwhelmed at the character creation stage and never actually join any campaigns they run. Too many dice, too many options and choices. I'm frankly bad at making decisions.
Tangentially, this is a trend for me regarding things that are too open ended; I've had Skyrim since it originally launched and never bothered to complete a full playthrough because, while I know there's a main story questline I could just focus on, there's so much else to do in the game that I end up just repeating the process of make a character -> do quests -> eventually get bored/have my focus shift to a different interest -> stop playing -> return and make a new character because it's been too long since the last time I played and I don't remember what all I did.
It's probably better that I just continue to watch and admire the game from afar. I won't 100% shut the door on the possibility that I might finally play someday though.
