Dumb things you've done on Animal Crossing: New Horizons?

This is the first video game I’ve ever played, other than like Duck Hunt and Super Mario a few times as a kid. Was never my thing, and still isn’t other than this game. I didn’t mind having to figure things out, though. I mostly used Reddit and Google until I found this board.

I didn't know how to sprint either. I played New Leaf off and on for years, but somehow never figured out you could sprint. This game, I didn't figure it out until my cousin came to visit my island about a month in and I couldn't keep up with her. I didn't understand what all the complaining about trampling flowers was about... I could run through them just fine.... thought people were just roleplaying.

Now I can't not sprint and feel silly for playing the game on slow mode for so long!

I actually never run unless I’m doing a treasure hunt. I like the slower pace and how long it takes to walk somewhere. I don’t let visitors run on my island either.

I gave Julian two star clocks, thinking that the customized one would replace the first one I gave him...

It did not.

The fact that so many people say they didn't know how to do "basic" actions or missed out on stuff because the game wasn't explicit about it (running/rotating/the dressing room/hitting rocks…) is really interesting to me, because it reminds me of that series of videos on Youtube by Razbuten about what gaming is like for non-gamers — you find out that an awful lot of games are very hard to pick up because the developers sometimes just assume the player will knows things already!
And the fact that it extends even to people who are at least somewhat more knowledgeable about games makes you think about how great it'd be if games thought more about this kind of accessibility.

Here's the video that talks about Animal Crossing:

I play a lot of games, but I've never played an Animal Crossing game until now. The game seemed to be telling me to eat fruit before I bashed rocks, so that's what I did. It Only dawned on me the next day after I hit the first respawned rock with my shovel what a mistake I'd made!

When I was first wishing on stars, I didn't realize there was a limit and I kept at it for about 4 hours, making as many wishes as possible. I thought the next day that the beach would be *covered* in star fragments. But then, the next day, there were... 20 star fragments. :-(

On the plus side, I did earn all Nook Miles that you get for wishing on stars since I wished on so many.

I didn't get into gaming until late last year (starting with Super Smash Brothers Ultimate because I kept feeling left out of some social gatherings, lol), so NH is only my second Switch game. Sometimes, my S/O asks me why I didn't try to do X in the game, and I respond with, "Was I supposed to know that? XD" Interesting video, btw!

It's weird, because I think other AC games did a much better job of explaining the basics of the game. It was only more complicated stuff (like TTing) that you needed to look up. NH can get confusing for me at times and it's not my first AC game. I'm not sure why NH of all games was the one they expected to played mostly by AC veterans, because it seems like the one that got marketed to a broader audience of newcomers.

That said, I don't think it's too bad because there's always the Internet to look things up. Of course, that doesn't work as well for things you didn't know existed to begin with.

I put bushes all around the edges of my cliffs (because I figured it needed something pretty) however I just realized not that long ago that is where the jacob's ladder flowers spawn. So now i have a million bushes that need to go that I will probably stare at and ignore for months lol.

I let my flowers grow for far, far too long. And now that I'm redoing my island layout, I have to clear out hundreds and hundreds of flowers by hand. Literally ever square inch not covered by a building/path/furniture piece has a flower on it :(

Passed over Flora when I got her on my first mystery island at the beginning of the game, I didn't know the first few villagers you invited would move in after you set up the first few plots haha. I hadn't yet decided I wanted her for my island. I also ended up with two villagers I really didn't want because I didn't realise you could invite villagers.
Planted a bunch of fruit trees in random places, so now they're gonna be really annoying to move around when I finally start building up things.

This just made me realise... is there a manual for this game?
I think I found out everything I know from the manuals packaged with the old games...

No there is not... But I think the controls are explained in the official guide.
I could download the 20 first pages as a My Nintendo reward and the basic controls were explained at the beginning 🤔

been waiting 3 days for my pink mums to respawn so i can finish a recipe, then realized they wouldn't since they were currently planted on the beach by audie's house >.<

Accidentally selling the mermaid dress when I planned to give it someone.
Fishing for the barrel eye during the wrong time frame and panicking about not being able to find it in time before realizing it is around all year.
Shaking trees without a net equipped. Wasn't able to do it before in older games so did not occur to me to try it in this game.
Don't get me started on tarantula island and the madness that ensued there. I'm not good at aiming the net or just timing in general, okay. (I'm pretty sure Wilbur was ready to dig my character's grave.)

I completely missed all of the fireworks in August (unless there is one last display this Sunday).
