I just did a dumb thing, and it gave me the idea to make this thread. Share dumb things you've done on this game. I'll start...

Just now, I tried to catch a bug. I missed. I tried again. Missed again. I'm now confused. A second later, the bug that was on my screen flew away. I feel dumb.

Yesterday I sold my nursery money tree to Nooks because I thought it was one of the nursery orange trees I only plant and then dig up to sell for th NM achievement. $30,000 eventual value down the drain

I did that in my Animal Crossing GC game! (or maybe it was a different GC game? IDR exactly) but I saw an ant and was like "oh, an ant in the game, cool..." then I got to a loading screen and was like "Oh! It's ON the screen!" Then I went to brush it away. ...It didn't get brushed away.
...It was somehow IN the television. Never did figure that one out 😅

Hmm... well, I got Stinky as an early camper. I would've liked him (not as a permanent resident or anything, but just for a bit) and I was bummed my town was full. I had no clue that you could actually invite campers even if your town is full 😫
EDIT: CAMPER! Not villager, I got him as a CAMPER 😝 Got up too early today... STUPID ZOOM CALLS.

I played for over a month until my S/O mentioned to me that you could sprint by holding "B." What a game-changer... XD

I also didn't know that there was a wasp and furniture in one of the trees on Mystery Islands, nor did I always check for the message bottle.
I literally only learned that we could run like, maybe, in June? I also only learned that we could rotate placed objects like... last month? It's funny how there are very, very basic things everyone assumes even big fans will know already (I feel for the poor soul here who shared a few days ago that they'd only just realized their Ables sold a lot more clothes each day if they go into the changing room, for example)

...Huh? They what 😱

I mean, I know about the running thing since I've played since the GC days and that's been a feature in... well, most if not all the games, I think? But what's this about the dressing room...?

Ables doesn't put out all the clothes on display in the shop room. I had clothing in the dressing room that I didn't see on display

Destroyed all the rocks on the first day (I think) because I was confused about how the food energy system worked

Yep. I had no idea how it all worked, but the game tells you somehow (can't remember fully) about eating fruit to give you energy to destroy rocks / chop down trees, so I assumed that was what we had to do in order to get stone / iron etc.

That made the first week harder than it should have been!

🤣

I have done too many dumb stuff! I can remember only one. So I bought a familiar statue from Redd, when I want to donate it, blathers said that I can't donate anything. I was really confused. So asked people until I realized, that I already donated another familiar statue before that. I didn't remember receiving it! I feel ashamed by that

Well, it's dumb in a dumb selfish way.

I really thought there would be an achievement for throwing trash items in the garbage bins. So I did that every time I fished up junk and then I realized it doesn't exist. I was dumbfounded and a bit annoyed, lol.

That was me lol. I can be a bit slow some times. I was wondering when a friend visited me and said something about coming back to check my diys i had saved for him because he had full pockets after buying everything at Able’s. lol...

One more dumb thing I did: when I visited @Hobowire ’s island for the first time and saw the snowflakes, I didn’t know that you needed to catch them with your net (i missed cherry blossom season and never went to a winter island before) so I kept walking up to the snowflake and tried pressing a button to grab it lol...

I’m sure there are other dumb things I did lol.

Actually, maybe someone else posted about it since I posted that maybe a couple weeks or more ago.

It took me a month to realise I could play the K.K. songs on a stereo. I thought they were just wall decorations, so passed on loads of them!

I forgot about the "void" system. In the end, my friend sent me two unwanted villagers.

I stalked a balloon present over a river and then towards an area with smaller waterfalls. I got impatient and popped it, knowing well that it was going to fall into the water instead of the space right next to it. So I wasted my time and lost a balloon because I was too impatient.

Most of us have been here at some point, some more than others. coughlikemecough

The fact that so many people say they didn't know how to do "basic" actions or missed out on stuff because the game wasn't explicit about it (running/rotating/the dressing room/hitting rocks…) is really interesting to me, because it reminds me of that series of videos on Youtube by Razbuten about what gaming is like for non-gamers — you find out that an awful lot of games are very hard to pick up because the developers sometimes just assume the player will knows things already!
And the fact that it extends even to people who are at least somewhat more knowledgeable about games makes you think about how great it'd be if games thought more about this kind of accessibility.

Here's the video that talks about Animal Crossing:

Goodness, I forgot I did this as well! I was so sad about it for the entire first week. 😂

I didn't get into gaming until late last year (starting with Super Smash Brothers Ultimate because I kept feeling left out of some social gatherings, lol), so NH is only my second Switch game. Sometimes, my S/O asks me why I didn't try to do X in the game, and I respond with, "Was I supposed to know that? XD" Interesting video, btw!

This just made me realise... is there a manual for this game?
I think I found out everything I know from the manuals packaged with the old games...
