I think it still works. It sounds like it did for you unless you meant to say no one pinged. I think pings happen more frequently after the update, so you might not have to stay in the water as long.

Usually when nobody's pinging I talk to someone and they tell me to take a break. Then someone else will ping.

I recommend plotting holes around the villagers so that you could find them easily.
