I read that the hours count towards tree growth. If I leave AC:NL on sleep mode does it rack up hours or do I have to have it awake?
Does sleep mode count as playtime for tree?

I'm not entirely sure about this, but I think the game continues during sleep mode from personal experience so I think the hours still count.
It should count your hours as long as you have your town loaded, regardless of being in sleep mode or not! Obviously the menu progress won't contribute towards your tree, but it does count towards your activity log which might make it less accurate. Unfortunately the only accurate updates on playtime you will get are the badges from Phineas and I suppose the tree as well.
In addition, I believe you need a certain amount of days played for your tree to grow, although you can achieve that through time travel if you want to speed up your tree!

Yeh I think you need quite a few number of days before you can sit on the ledge...it's something like 50 days or something
