Well. It depends. To the masses? Yes. Popular villagers are the villagers that have the most people who like them, it's not rocket science that more people would like a town with popular villagers in opposition to unpopular ones. But if you're asking how you feel about the town? Not at all. Chances are you'll like some diamond in the rough, and then scoff at some popular villagers like Ankha or Marshal saying you don't get why they're so glorified. Sure you'll have some popular villagers in your town, it's not like they're terrible or anything but having an all tier 1 town would lose it's appeal to the player since you don't have an emotional attachment to them, it's just what the Internet wants you to like.

No, that's just some envious people who only want popular villagers because obvious reasons. And if they don't have any in their town, their friends who are on this site, they may say. "You don't have any popular villagers? LOLOLOL What a loser" They start getting some popular ones just to join the club. What they don't realize is that they can like any villager they please. They don't feel it because of how ashamed they were by their friends making fun of the person that doesn't have tier ones.
When that person has all popular villagers. There may be a person that might say "You sure have a lot of popular villagers, don't you want to be uniqe and let some unpopular villagers in?" This might be a big problem for that person, because if the person gets unpopular villagers, the person will get picked on again, but if the person keeps the villagers, the person won't be unique with its villagers.
Choose who you want, and try not to get picked on. (If that ever happens of course)

I gave in and got Marshal because I needed a Smug villager in my mostly cat town. He looks the most similar to a cat and there aren't any smug cats, so I chose him. I simply don't care for him at all, I liked my Lopez better.

No absoloutely not. Choose the villagers that you like best. Tiers are supposed help cyclers and sellers sell certain villagers a certain price. They are not a list of villagers you should get in your town. Also anyone who says a town has trash tier villagers are full of you know what. The most popular villager I have in my town is Cookie who is tier 3 and I consider myself lucky to not have a tier 1 villager be my favorite. My favorite is Biskit who is a tier 4.

It really doesn't matter if you have low tier villagers or high tier villagers pick villagers that you like don't pick them because they are all high tier some of my dreamys are low tier villagers.

I agree with everyone else on here. You should get the villagers YOU like. Do what makes YOU happy. Just because most of your villagers aren't necessarily popular doesn't make your town any less great than a town full of tier 1's. Honestly, having lower tier villagers can be a good thing. It makes your town unique and it makes it stand out from the crowd of towns filled with popular villagers. Going to towns with the same villagers all the time gets repetitive and boring really quick. The only important part is that you're happy. 
People should have whatever villagers they please, there is no such thing as a bad or good town, this game is meant to be personal and fun.
That said, crapping on others because they have high tier villagers is about the same as crapping on ones who have low tier ones, so I am confused as to why some people in this thread do this and think it's any better.

I think it's so sad when people say things like that. Like everyone said, please don't listen to rude comments. As long as you're happy with your town, that's all that matters honestly. If people call your town trash again, just laugh at their faces. How pathetic for people to think there's only one way to play the game; that'd be so boring and monotone. There's nothing wrong with having low-tier villagers (same for high tier). I think a lot of low tier villagers are fantastic. That's the beauty with this game, there's so many possibilities on how you want your town to look.

All the villagers are unique and deserved to be loved! I say continue to do you because you will have way more fun than if you have a town full of "popular" villagers. No no no. Do not think that. A lot of my favorites are also low tiers, such as Curlos, Agent S, and Prince! Just because you like higher tiers does not makes you or your town more superior, it just means your preference is more common! In fact, if you like the unpopular, you may get them a lot easier! Do not listen to those who are telling you that your town is lesser just because of the villagers you have. I mean, that doesn't even make any sense! It's not like the more popular villagers can do stuff that the others can't? Just don't fall into peer pressure and lose your favorites just so you can make your town look "better" with higher tier villagers. And, make sure to report anyone who is making you feel self-conscious about anything. That kind of behavior is not permitted, here or anywhere for that matter. Rather than being rude, they either keep it to themselves or put it in a way nicer than that, like this for example, "You're town is great, but the villagers you chose I wouldn't necessarily want in my town." If they don't like your town, they don't have to visit it. Sorry this is so long, but I have quite a history of people like this and I just want you to know that you are you and your town is yours, not theirs. They are in no position to push you and your decisions - for a VIDEO GAME (or anything but still) - around.

A lot of people fill up their towns with top tier villagers just for the status symbol. You should have the villagers that you like in your town!! Also, they're probably easier to obtain than the top tier since there isn't such a high demand 
Just remember there are no such thing as villagers that are better than others, the tier list is only for pricing purposes in the Villager Trading Plaza and your opinion is just as valid as the people who tell you your town is trash. If you think your town is amazing don't let other people try to convince you otherwise and the whole point of animal crossing it to create a town that is Personalised for you. I find it kind of sad that there are people who play animal crossing and act like this to other players, I'm sure that if you posted a dream address plenty of the people here would tell you your town fine the way it is.

There are over 300 villagers for a reason... Not everyone is supposed to have the same 20 or so villagers floating around. How boring would that be? You should totally post your DA so we can actually tell you how great your town is.

There's so many cute villagers that aren't high on the tier lists that I love. For example, Shari, Nana, Eunice, Baabara, Wendy, Grizzly, and Tutu. I do have some populars like Bob, Dotty, and Beau, but that's simply because I like them. Honestly anyone saying that your town is trash because you have different villagers is probably jealous
