I still have my rivers. I mostly made them smaller (3 wide instead of 4) and straightened a part for a bridge. I still manage to catch the second largest fish in there, so that is good. Do you really need to remove the river though? You could try changing how it flows first, or make it smaller.
I planned to keep my original river when I first started, but there was a really awkward strip of land on the left side that I just couldn't find a very nice use for. So I've decided to finally split them up and have a secondary spring near my left river mouth, which I am so far pretty happy with...
I'm really enjoying that terraforming tool. I thought I'd be very happy with what I started with, but it didn't take me long to figure out that some things (like a horseshoe shaped pond) are just very impractical haha

Current (working on it!):
Now I just need to find a way to tidy up the river bit behind the museum, where it currently just kind of ends abruptly. And then put more water around, but in convenient locations this time.
My map came with fairly angular rivers, which was why I chose it to begin with - the less work I have to do to make not-awkwardly-shaped spaces, the better. I've since added a little to the main river here and there, adjusted some of the bends, but it more or less remains how it was and I try my best to both work around/with it and realize when it's easier to just change it a little.
I definitely still have my set of challenges and strange fixtures to figure out how to use. I figure at least for some of them that I should leave it how it is and make the most of it because it's the unique flavor of my island.
I still have both of my rivers (although I tweaked them a "little" bit) in fact, I actually expanded the rivers cause I want a lot of water on my island.
Yeah. I don't use the waterscaping all that much. Not confident enough and I feel as if it's really hard to come back from something if you've messed up.
