When you see other islands online with such creative designs. Then I look at mine and think.... wow, this looks terrible! Lol.

I'm not going to change anything I've done yet to this point, but it really makes me second guess what I'd like my island to be like.

Anyone else experience this??

All the time. Makes me feel pressured sometimes to fill in areas that have nothing in them yet.

i feel like it has some sort of reverse psychology on me. instead of getting bummed out, i end up getting too inspired and fix my own island as a result (mostly in terms of terraforming. always on some sort of terraforming/pathing hell).

even that has its own drawbacks too, however.
getting too inspired means i can never stick to one look lol...though im trying my best to just be content with what i have.

Oh definitely. I see a lot of different island designs on Pinterest and looking back on my island makes me think I'm not as good. Although tbh if I tried to design some of the more intricate things like many people do I feel like I would go insane.

Usually what I do to relieve that is just remind my self that my island is my own creation. I've had a lot of people tell me that they really like it, and it's only about 50% done right now. I myself am honestly interested to see how it will turn out!

I see those Islands too but, some of them are so decorated that the game lags and they can’t get anything done like fish or shoot down balloons which makes me feel better about my own.

I only sort of felt that way when I wasn't sure where I wanted to put my villagers houses. I kept seeing these really cool neighborhood areas. I was trying to put my homes in pairs at the time and decided I wanted a neighborhood instead. I guess instead of thinking it looked terrible, I just looked at it as something that I could improve.
Overall, I like seeing some designs people have, but I try to let it inspire me instead! Especially when people have really cool layouts for their entrances or for their rocks.

What I actually have been doing with mine is creating "neighborhoods", sort of.

I made a main street on my island, where I have kind of a ritsy looking neighborhood for 3 of my villagers who I think would appreciate being close to all the shopping.

Then, I have my beach area with a couple houses and a boardwalk I finished making a couple days ago, complete with stalls, the teacup ride and other food stuff. I am working on a campground area where I'll have two of my more forresty looking houses/villagers placed, with dirt pathing and a bon fire.

My last neighborhood is going to be mushroom forest and have sort of a magical feel.

I couldn't commit to just one theme, lool....

Yeah though, I am trying to just incorporate things I like without overhauling anything. Kind of sucks though at times feeling like "Oh, why the heck didn't I think to do it that way??"

I totally understand. That's why I tend to avoid looking at island tours and such and just do my own thing. I'm really proud of my island now and don't feel so insecure anymore, so maybe that'll help you? I'm sure your island looks great! Everyone has their own style. If we all did the same thing, then it wouldn't be so fun to visit other people's islands because they wouldn't be unique from each other!

Yes! I am trying to have that attitude about it and actually complete my vision first before I go and decide that I no longer like something. Going to avoid looking at other islands for the time being, hahah.

Yup. Tore it all down and I'm reworking everything. Trying to figure out how to save space on the island and fill in areas with things other than just houses.

I have frequently run out of space for what I initially plan when I find that the houses take up more space than I thought... given that I fence them in and provide a little yard space for each one.

I'm not too sure what I'll do if more shops get added, hahah.

rather than get discouraged, i like to take little pieces of inspiration that really stand out to me instead of feeling like i have to redo everything to make mine look as good as some of the island tours i watch. the way you decorate your island is uniquely yours, so of course it's not going to look completely identical to someone else's

remember that you're the one who sees what your island looks like the most, so after a while it might start to look boring to you after seeing it everyday. but to others who visit your island and have never seen it before, it's fresh and new and just as inspiring as you feel about other people's islands!

I think the best way to save room with houses is by putting them close to each other. But I've seen so many islands that give houses big yards, and to top it off, there are a lot of rivers, lakes, and waterfalls. It makes me wonder how they even did all that while still somehow keeping a lot of space for everything else. At the moment, I'm trying to plan out certain locations I want, like a cafe, diner, park, etc. Then I want to work around those area and put houses down. It does get tedious, and sometimes like you, I get bummed out. But then I tell myself that it's not going to change itself and that I just need to grin and bear it. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy New Horizons. It's a fun game, but when it comes down to working on different ideas, I'm not as super creative as others.

im a weird mix of saddened, envious, and inspired when i see cool lil areas on islands on tumblr, reddit, etc. the sadness and envy mostly comes from the fact that i lowkey rly want to time travel to unlock terraforming and stuff again, but ik if i do that i wont have any bells to use for furnitures and clothes bc i'll just be focused on island development. im mostly inspired bc of how ppl use their resources? like the theme i have in mind is unshakable i WONT change it i luv the aesthetic too much but,, some ppl's flower arrangements and paths and such rly speak to me so i want to kind of incorporate it into something that matches my island more if that makes sense.

Yeah, I agree! I would say I'm not an overly creative person myself so it can be a struggle, but having fun is the most important part of it. I took a break for couple weeks after some burn out and that seemed to help me as well.

Most definitely. I've seen specific things that I wish I had thought of as well. I'm going to finish my island before I make any major changes.

I think it will be fun and actually increase the longevity of my playtime to make those future tweaks.

Yes, I actually gave up doing a completely horror themed Island because I saw what other people had done with that theme and realised I'd never even come close to what's already been created. So now I'm just building what I feel like building. I like what I've done so far, but there are still moments when I get hit with a 'my island sucks' phase. People are so amazingly creative, I should just stop watching island tour videos, but I just cant help myself xD I get a dose of inspiration and soul crushing disappointment everytime I watch one.

My island is my comfort, and honestly I don’t want to put too much love and effort in it because there’s no cloud save option and I could potentially lose it all at the drop of my Switch, I guess...

If Nintendo does make cloud saves an option, I definitely would spend hours crafting the “perfect” island. (Too bad I have no creativity when it comes to design :( )

I also have OCD, which sounds like it would help with design, but it actually limits me from being daring with my work a lot.

I got so depressed with the state of my island that I completely flattened/smoothed it out, save for a small section of cliff that contains my museum and leads to my secret beach. I have no river aside from the mandatory openings, no ponds, and next to no terraforming done. I know my island will never be even close to the ridiculously intricate ones I've seen. However, I'm working at my own pace in manageable amounts and trying my best. Currently, I'm having great fun putting together my residential area. Sometimes you have to ignore what other people do and just focus on your creative ability.

i wouldn’t say it’s necessarily a depressed feeling, more overwhelmed? i get so many different ideas for what i want that it can be a little much trying to achieve all of those things but still have a cohesive island. at the end of the day, i like where my island is headed in terms of decor + layout, so it’s not something i stress too much about. sure, i could have a cottage core or fantasy themed island but i honestly love the quiet asian minimalism i have the most!

I feel inspired when I look at other people's island. I love seeing how each person is using the same item or pathways, but they make their areas look so different from each other. It's quite fascinating XD When I look at my own island though, I feel so bummed out LOL. I have no idea why I chose such a bad map (happy I got Dom as a starter from it though because he is a cutie lolol 😋 ). I am also bothered by the placement of my RS. I would endlessly create things to try to make my RS area better and be content with it for 24 hours and then next day I destroy everything. It's been like this for months now ;-; send halp pls! I really wish we can move RS 😭
