So about a year ago I remember my friend telling me that charging and playing with the system on is essentially awful for the 3DS system. Ever since then I've been extremely paranoid to charge and play. They told me that it would shrink battery life while not on the charge. But in all honesty, my old 3DS system, I abused it because I didn't know what I was doing. I charged and played nearly 24/7 and I couldn't tell a decrease in battery life.
Since then I have stopped charging and playing on my new 3DS XL just out of paranoia. But I'm curious. Does anyone charge and play? Have you been able to tell a difference in battery life whilst not on charge?

IS is actually bad for the battery pack? I'd honestly like to know.

Don't worry, I have the same fear and have been told the same thing by other 3DS users! So you're not alone. ^^

It happens with phones so I assume it's the same with the 3DS battery.

I didn't know this could happen. Now, let me think about this for a few days.

battery life will drain over time regardless so meh

I sometimes will charge and play and sometimes won't, just depends on various factors

My 3DS is usually either on or sleeping when I'm charging.....

I only turn it off if I don't intend to play for a few hours ._.

If it's about to die in the middle of an online match in smash I'll do it

I just charge it when I feel it needs to be charged.

I don't usually charge it whilst playing it because I don't often stay on my 3DS long enough for it to need charging, especially since I just stick it on charge whenever I'm not using it (since it stops charging when full anyway).

If it does need charging whilst playing though, I'll just stick the charger in and carry on playing. I'm not stopping playing because it needs to be charged.

Batteries die over time anyway, I don't think charging whilst playing is going to massively effect that. Plus the 3DS charges pretty darn quickly, so it's not even going to be plugged in long.

Ohh, I also have been told that over charging any electrical devices would cause somes problems to the system or delay it in such ways Dx not sure if it really does do that, but I get paranoid too xD

you have a pretty good point there.

oh my gosh yeah, my phone that I've had for over 3 years now dies on me so quickly. And that is probably due to charging it while it's on or falling asleep while it charges at night!

I charge and play all the time and I always have. The batteries for all of my systems still hold a charge for a long time. As other people have said, they wear down over time anyway. Besides, I think you're able to get them replaced. I'm not sure how much it would cost though. I've had my Gameboy SP since they came out and it still holds a good charge, although obviously not as long as my New 3DS XL. It's not something I would worry much about!!

The idea of charging the 3DS while using it causes it to reduce battery life seems to be a misconception. I've done this a lot myself (including with a Gamepad) and I've experienced no trouble whatsoever. Furthermore, a few sources claim that smartphone battery will not be damaged at all by using while plugged in. If the batteries of the 3DS are similar to those of rechargeable phones, this is probably the case for the 3DS as well.

Hm.. I have honestly never heard of this before. I charge and play all the time, and everything has been fine.

I was under the impression that's for older style batteries? As this no longer seems to be an issue for phone batteries as technology has improved. Although like other people have mentioned I'm not sure if you can compare phone batteries and DS batteries.

(Also I don't know what model your phone is but the over charging your phone battery thing is also for older style batteries, not newer ones so I wouldn't stress too much)

Yes I charge and play at the same time! To be honest it'll only worsen the battery life if you keep doing it over prolonged periods of time. I usually have to charge my 3DS once every few days - I play on my 3DS on average about an hour a day, sometimes more and sometimes less, but I don't often charge whilst playing because of it. I've only had my 3DS about a month though, so I'm not noticing any differences. With my old 3DS, YES, I did notice a difference, then again, it's 4 years old now (I bought it in 2011) so of course it's not going to run as well as it used to but that's also because it's old. It wasn't too bad, it's just I wouldn't be able to play it for as long as I wanted to.

One good thing though that I invested in during the summer was a portable 3DS charger. I say portable but it's just like a 3DS charger that you can plug into some port in your car and it charges it there. So there's no need for me to worry about running out of charge during a long car journey ever again. :) That was honestly the worst thing ever when I was younger. :\

I have had my original 3DS for over 3 years now and I admit to actually charging and playing EVERY time xD I can't say whether it's gotten worse or not and only that it still works like a charm, I have definitely heard things about not charging too long etc. and yeah I assume long-term like that would not be good. But anyways I still do charge and play but lesser than before as I havent really gotten so into it as much. I guess I shall wait and see how long my 3DS can still hold out on me, before totally frying >__<

I do it a lot, but I've noticed even if I don't do it, the battery life is slowly decreasing, so I don't think it has to do with charging and playing at the same time, but instead the total amount of time you play and the number of times you charge.

I do it alllll the time, with my phone, my 3DS and my Wii U Gamepad. I haven't noticed much of a difference when it comes to battery life or anything.
