"Yes indeed. You see, cooking is the type of art that disappears as soon as it is completed. Pok?mon battles are the same. Even memories of sweet victory soon fade after the battle ends. To devote yourself entirely to such a life, made up of fleeting experiences--that is truly artful."

This would be such a beautiful quote, if only Pokemon were real and this lifestyle were possible.

But alas, it is not so.

Being good at Pokemon battling is knowing match-ups and predicting well. It's like chess, would you consider chess an art?
About the most creative thing and close to art as it gets is the creativity aspect of creating teams and having interesting synergies within them. Even that isn't considered fully art though. Art is seen in many ways though, so I'll respect if someone sees Pokemon battling as art.

Pokemon by itself is art of course - the anime, designs, storyline, etc.

Not when practically everyone ends up with the same result like in Pokemon XY online. All you ever saw was talonflame, kangaskhan, garchomp, greninja, rotom, and gengar with the same predictable moves each time.

Yes.
In the anime at least IMO.

Game canon no because all you do is press buttons.

Not really in my opinion... Half the time I feel like it's just luck, maybe strategic in some cases. However it doesn't really take much skill to push a few buttons and take a couple of "risks".

Chess has been considered an art since before the 15th century, yo.
Apart from that, there's the people who make chess problems/compositions, which is considered an art in and of itself.

I like watching the official Pokemon tournaments, as the contestants have this oddly deep concentration about them. Some of them take notes to predict what the other person may choose, what their movesets might be, etc. In that sense, it's a match of knowledge and forward thinking more than it's a match of pitting digital animals against each other.

Because of that I would consider it art in a way. Teams are often made up of the same pool of Pokemon though. If someone were to choose their favorites (in terms of design rather than strength) and still win the majority of battles, I would consider that more artful than the dime a dozen users of Greninja, Mega Kangaskhan, Talonflame and whatnot.

I'd say it's more of an art in the anime, especially pokemon contest- battle rounds.

Grand Festival Dawn vs Zoey was superb

In the same way that the highest level of competitive Melee battles can be called a sport, Pokemon battles can be an art.

No because videos of people battling pokemon and sweating like they are doing something other than pressing buttons to direct their electronic creatures is not an art...

HA so eloquently put.

it's always widely been considered as a strategic game. i guess the creation of the pawns and designs can be considered art though.

in melee you get more freedom of expression though. i think i can agree on melee being more of an art form in terms of gaming. if pokemon battling was anything similar to that then definitely it'd be considered an art.
