I did play them when I could in the beginning. One was the island girl and the other was the runner to another town. Now the mayor has got all the PWP I started playing one of the side players.
The mayor checks in for movers and takes care of that. Than the fun side player comes out to play with the villagers. Found that the game was more fun. I have two side players and I try to rotate them so the villagers don't speak about them missing.
All my side players houses are full decorated.
