Hello! I've recently restarted my island and realized that I don't really want to fully upgrade my home. At most I'd just like to fully upgrade the main room and have a 1 room house. Do I need to upgrade to unlock KK Slider, or get to 5 stars?

You’ll want to for the storage. Trust trust trust trust trust trust trust trust trust trust trust trust trust me
I second this. A fully upgraded house and mostly decorated island and I'm still scrambling for more storage

Yeah, I've had a fully upgraded house before. I won't need that much storage.

I'm asking if any gameplay is locked behind your home upgrades.

No. The upgraded Nooks and Ables and Resident Services effect your island rating, though. I believe you could keep the tent if you wanted, you just don’t be able to get those Nook Miles achievements stamped or any HHA awards.

Awesome! Thanks. I plan on upgrading the shops, I just want a simple home for my main villager.

I know the guide book gives a detailed breakdown of what counts for what points wise, so you could probably confirm via that (though I know someone shared it all on the board way back in like April) to see what you’d need to make sure you unlock KK

Oh perfect, I'll dig my guide out. Thanks!

Edit: I just want to make sure I won't miss out on key features of the game due to my housing choices.

you can check if i'm wrong, but last time i checked with my secondary character who has one final payment left (I don't think I will be paying) she couldn't relocate villagers. So if you don't is possible you can't move buildings around. I could be wrong, don't feel like switching right now to confirm

I'm not sure secondary characters can relocate villagers. I believe that's a function only available to the Island Representative (the first player).

Yah, that, exactly. Secondary characters can't move buildings ever- island reps can move them early on, though.
(personally, I think that was a poor design choice, but whatever- doesn't bother me, but for people who share Switches? I imagine it'd be a pain!)

ah ok, glad I never fully paid it off then

your gameplay won’t be affected if you don’t completely upgrade your house but like already mentioned, you just won’t get the max amount of storage space and you’ll also be missing quite a bit of exterior design options as those unlock as you upgrade your house ;u;
