I know some people want to get a tan to get darker skin, but for others it's not what they want.
I remember my skin was getting darker n darker on my mayor Hilda last summer and l decided to wear big Gracie hat and glasses to stop it. In 2016 my sister got a really bad tan, she actually got to the darkest skin tan. She said it looked weird and so unrealistic to turn that dark from getting a tan xD

I remembered getting tan after playing for a few days during summer and I totally forgot about the tanning function. I've been using an umbrella to mitigate the effects all the way until September  I don't mind a light tan on my mayor character but my character was getting real dark and looked odd with my Japanese outfit. Yea I don't think it's realistic how dark your mayor character can get in the game, would be more realistic if you became red and sick instead imo

I usually play in the evenings/nighttime so I don't have to actively worry about getting a tan. I think I prefer not to tan on most of my characters, though, just because I have very light skin in real life and don't usually get tan myself. My main character that is based on myself carries around a parasol all the time anyway so even if I did play in the daytime during summer, she wouldn't tan.

I have considered making a few other characters that would utilize the tan skin, but I think it would be too much work to keep up with tanning them all the time so I haven't tried it. I imagine it would be especially difficult to keep a mid-level tan on a character. The darkest tans do not look like tans but naturally dark skin to me. I think New Horizons handles it much better by getting rid of the tanning system altogether and letting people choose their skintones.

I'm kind of mixed on it. I think its annoying for example that it's the ONLY way to get a darker skin tone in New Leaf, so people shouldn't have to rely on that, especially in a game where almost every other aspect of your aesthetic is completely customizable. But while it is sort of distracting, it is an interesting mechanic that I think is kind of a fun surprise. Like "oh, that's happened."

I‘ve been playing animal crossing for 5 years (and ironically enough, new leaf was my first game) and I never knew that was an actual thing in the game what-

I kinda wanted to discover it. I never played for long enough to ever tan. RIP

I don't really care for getting a tan to be honest in this game, my hair color is brown and it looks kind of weird when the tan makes the my skin look the same color as my hair. I've never really bothered changing like my appearance in New Leaf, I might consider it some day though.

I only realised you could tan in this game this year actually lol, I noticed my skin getting more tan in July because I never used an umbrella or hat! I researched online and found out tanning was an actual game function.

My skin is ghostly pale irl so naturally I had to keep my character as accurate as possible by using a parasol constantly for the rest of summer.

Tbh it's an annoying game feature. People should have been able to pick a darker skin tone from the start, rather than having to make so much effort just to get a player character that looks like them.

It should be more red like instead!

i personally never got a tan but i hate how it’s the only way to have a darker skin tone in-game and that all characters were default white ;v;

I loved this feature because it was such a surprise. I only ever got one level of tan because of when I played, but I thought it added a touch of realism to the game.

I wish it was an option in New Horizons.

I really didn’t like it. I used to always play at night (with the tarantulas) because I didn’t want my character to just randomly get tanned.

They should have really added skin tones in the new leaf game, since idk about anyone but. As someone who’s pale, I burn rather than tan.

I remember getting a tan on ACCF when I was only like 9 and I reset my game because it didn't match me irl and it bothered little me. My sister and her bf at the time laughed at me and explained to me that tans were not permanent and I was filled with so much regret

I've never purposefully tanned in the game yet, but I plan to add a character to my main town in the future for whom I will go through the effort of acquiring the tan. It is annoying that it's the only way to have a darker skin tone in New Leaf and that it would require constant upkeep to stop it from fading, but unfortunately it is what it is. It's good that they added more skin tones to choose from in the games released since.

I don't like how it's the only way to have a darker skin tone in New Leaf.

However, I personally prefer to have a lighter skin tone in the game (similar to my current avatar), as that is closer to the skin tone that I have in real life. So, I don't mind tanning, but I would prefer that I not be so tan that it would not be a realistic tan of someone with my skin tone to achieve.

I just hate that this is how it works. Either you go through the trouble to visit the island a lot to keep a tan, or you go through the trouble of wearing a hat or umbrella during the summer or on the island. Either way, the feature will just annoy you.
I'm glad they changed it in New Horizons.

It kinda does suck that that's the only way to get darker skin in NL haha. Although it is kinda realistic, to keep visiting the island or using an umbrella can be a bit annoying
