You should always make it apparent how long you will hold a villager after a winner has been determined. Somewhere in the your auction/cycle rules stating,
"You must make time to pick up your new villager within a 24-hour period beginning at the end of the auction. If you cannot do this please make an effort to inform me in your bidding post how much time you'll need. Please don't bid at all if you have no intent to retrieve your villager in a timely manner or the bells to back up your bid."
If anyone complains after losing a villager because they failed to pick up a villager on time, or are trying to gather the necessary funds, then you can simply redirect them to your rules.
