One of my residents, Wolfgang, is a voracious reader. He reads everywhere. In swings, on log stools, under trees. And I find myself placing even more chairs, benches and stools when I re-decorate certain small corners so that he'll have even more places to go to where he can sit down with a good book. On the other hand, even though I have islanders who have fitness as a hobby, I don't put out sports equipment for them. I've thought about it but decided that it'll look weird since my island is pretty rustic in looks and feel.

What about you? Do you decorate with your villagers' hobbies in mind? More musical instruments for the musically inclined? More flowers for the nature lovers?

I definitely do when decorating my villager yards! I also look at their goals and preferred colours/styles for more ideas to further differentiate who gets what in their yard.
  • Agnes: small mini golf course, with a pink golf bag
  • Ankha: desert oasis and some Egyptian landmarks
  • Bones: playground in the sand
  • Bluebear: has a white table with a cartoonist's set and cute music player on top
  • Chief: street piano (to go with his interior's grungy look and some other instruments, spot to play wei-chi because that seems like his type of game, heh
  • Daisy: will make her yard into an outdoor library with a nearby small excavation site
  • Judy: pink and blue moon furniture and décor to continue on with the celestial theme of her house interior
  • Poncho: planning on making a rocket launch pad area this weekend
  • Zell: modern patio area with a lily music player

not currently, but I am trying to plan out a little yard for each of my villagers based on their interests! though I don't know how to do it without the entire neighborhood taking up too much space :'<

My town is designed to act like a community with the layout and I give each villager a big backyard that is related to their personality. I also put heavy emphasis on my town plaza since that's where most of my villagers hang out and have both of the shopping locations on each side of it. I try my best to encourage their hobbies because I find the game most enjoyable when the villagers are doing their hobbies in areas I made for them.

That's a good and valid point -- my villager yards take up approximately 60% of my island. 😂

Freya (fashion): House is next to Able Sisters and she owns a flower shop
Jambette (fashion): nothing :( but she has pretty flowers
Scoot (sporty): kettle bell in front of his house and he shares a pool with Ursala
Ursala (music): Street piano outside her house
Cyd (music): Synthesizer outside his house + music player
Tabby (music): Marimba outside her house + music player
Dizzy (play): An elephant slide and a pool
Erik (nature): Garden and plants
Hamphrey (nature): Nothing specific to his hobby - he has always run the noodle shop on my island since he first arrived lol
Ken (education): Shares an area with Hamphrey. I also put out an artisanal bug cage and in the village where he lives, there are bug cages and books sitting out

I find fashion the hardest to make specific lawns for.

oooh I love these ideas! for fashion, I think putting any of the sewing items or placing custom design dresses would work 0:

I definitely decorate with hobbies in mind but also their personalities and aspirations. While they might not be a feature of this game, I know a villager like Merengue wants to be a chef in general so I made a cafe. I planted lots of flower in her yard to dress things up but also go well with her nature hobby. I love to put toys and balloons and all sorts of thinks for the "play" hobby. I even place workout equipment for the jock villagers. I also made a concert stage for all my villagers who love to sing. And so on! Everyone gets a little something that fits them and I think when you put it all together it makes for a fun island!

I totally agree. For the fashion hobby, I had to look at the villager's goals for ideas. When I had Pango (her goal is to be an esthetician), I made her yard look like a spa/salon.

Ooh I never even considered their life aspirations! Jambette wants to be an artist so maybe I'll put a painting set out for her (also just learned that she's skilled in ventriloquism. Creepy but ok)

I've started to do that, Antonio has a basketball court in front of his house, Bones has a playground in front of his, etc.

A little bit! When I had skye, she sang all the time so I had a microphone set up by her house.

Megan has a beehive and artisanal bug cage in her yard.

But I don't like (most) sports or exercise equipment so that stays inside for the jocks.

I did kind of do that! each of my villagers have a little garden area where I put some stuff I think they'd like. the main ones that spring to mind are Beau, who I gave a flower patch because he loves watering plants, and Yuka, who has a little dining table to sit and read at. but around the island I have little things to appeal to each villager, such as a gym for the workout gang :p

sometimes it's incredibly hard to decide between what i enjoy for my own aesthetic purposes, and trying to accommodate the villagers i have on my island. so far, i'm at about a halfway point between them; mostly because some of my villagers' houses haven't been moved yet to where i want them to be placed.

for tank, i made him a little stone area outside his house on either side; one for more of a necessity that has a clothesline, and the other side has a locker and some work out equipment.

sandy really seemed to like flowers and reading, so i made her a nice garden area and a place she can sit down with some trees.

i definitely catered way too much to chrissy's wishes to become a popstar, and gave her an elevated spot on my island. it's decorated with a pool, some hedges for privacy, and a few poolside chairs to lounge on as well. on the opposite side, she has some lattice fencing around nothing but pink flowers, and a white garden table set. i also.. overdid it some more with a white cute sofa and a rattan table, matched with a popstar magazine. way, way overdid her area.

lastly, octavian has the most aesthetic looking area around his house out of the ones i've done so far. because it looks really nice with the imperial fencing, i've done a lot of the bamboo items for decoration, with a pond. it definitely doesn't match the inside but we wont go there.

{edit} i feel so horrible, but i forgot all about the farm i made boomer. v:

I've never done this yet, no, but I might in the future. It was never really something I considered.

My island's theme is history and the various cultures that have existed and/or continue to exist around the world, and the decorations around my residents' homes mostly just tie into the cultures that the residents are based around or just simply relate to some aspect of their design. Ankha and Diva have a pyramid and a couple sphinxes near their homes, Klaus has a Capitoline Wolf (called Motherly Statue in-game) and the Tower of Pisa beside his home, there's a pagoda beside Kabuki's home, Ribbot has plasma balls on either side of his house, and there's a full mammoth skeleton beside Tucker's house.

I guess the closest would be Vic; his house is surrounded by blue roses and there's an anchor nearby since he's based on a viking and his house's interior is based on a ship out at sea.

There is also a random tire toy I crafted early on and had sitting around out in the open without any plans of what to do with. One day I saw Tucker staring at it, talked to him, and he said that he liked that the tire toy was there because it would give his grandma a place to sit if she visited. I thereafter decided to move the tire toy right beside his house and it has been there ever since.

Now having seen this thread, I might try to implement the sorts of ideas presented here.

i don’t decorate my island itself with their hobbies in mind, nor do i decorate very often lmao, but i do try and decorate their yards accordingly!

kid cat: i’ve currently got some barbells, kettlebells, a basketball hoop + a basketball and other fitness items set out for him!

skye: her hobby is “music” and so, i’ve currently got a piano, a harp and some other instruments out for her c’:

margie: her hobby is “education” and she really likes reading and so i’ve given her a sort of garden/park themed backyard; she’s got a pond with some ducks, several flowers for her to study and a bench + some pillows for her to sit on when she reads :)

a little? i'm not entirely sure on all my villagers' hobbies because most of them seem to equally do several things so i largely based it on personality. biskit is the only one with a (side) yard that has a swinging bench, a sandpit, and some chalk drawing patterns. bob has a balloon and drinks machine and lives next to the park. vivian, who mostly reads/researches, has ruins next to her house. kid cat has a kick scooter outside his house and lives next to a small football pitch. ketchup and henry (duck and frog) live next to a waterfall/river and on the cliff overlooking an ocean but that one wasn't intentional.

Yes absolutely! I tore down my residential area about a month ago just to give my villagers more personalised yards/areas.

* Fauna, Stella and Sherb (nature) live close to each other and share a flower farm/garden complete with silos, a well.
* Kiki and Diana (eduaction) are next door neighbours and have a shared outdoor library.
* Marshal and Rosie (music) have music players next to their houses playing their favourite songs.
* Wolfgang (education) and Chief (music) have a shared yard which includes a library for Wolfgang and music area for Chief.
*Bam (play) has every type of exercise equipment you can think of since he’s a jock with the play hobby (it’s... a lot sometimes.)

@xara & @TaylaJade: that sounds absolute lovely and creative 😊. I kinda wish I gave my villagers yards. The one that I have ( a secret dining area for Kiki and Punchy), I’m probably going to to tear down eventually since I’m not really happy with it. The only villager that i might be giving a yard to is Ankha, whom I don’t have yet, since I am planning to try to make the most of all of the space i have on my island.

Initially I was planning on decorating the outside of Punchy’s house with flowers of the color he likes and maybe some furniture but now I think I’ll move the flowers and put something else there.

I do have music players all over the island, but I didn’t put them out with my villagers’ hobbies in mind.
