I was wondering if DLCs for the 3DS stayed on the cartridge, because I had a 3DS that stopped working all of a sudden, but it didn't have any DLC. So I just want to know... Thank you!

It saves on the SD card, at least for any game I have DLC for. DLC licenses are also linked to your NNID, if you have one.

I would assume it's saved to the SD card unless the game had it built in and then "released" it later...I'm not entirely sure the latter is too common on DS games!

I'm pretty sure it's the SD card though, as it normally appears under your data management on the 3DS!

Wait, so it will technically be with my NNID as well?

Yeah. Your NNID keeps track of your DLC licences as well. You can't use the same DLC with a different NNID, you'd have to re-buy. You typically need a working 3DS to transfer your NNID to another one though, so you may need to have it fixed, or have Nintendo assist with the transfer.

A different NNID or a different 3DS completely? Because if I put that NNID on a new 3DS, would it work for free?

NNID's can only be on 1 3DS at a time because !!reasons!! so unless you transferred (which you can't since it's broken), you have to make a new NNID and repay. You might still have the save data, but not the actual game itself.

Okay thank you! It's just because when I get DLCs for Fire Emblem Fates, I don't want to have to worry about what happened to my first 3DS.
