Diving Trick Help?

I've been doing everything that you're supposed to do for the diving trick. Unfortunately, nothing is working. I've gotten pinged once by Eunice, and it was just her asking about a new catch phrase. XD Could you guys offer suggestions and the steps you take to do it?

Put on a wetsuit, go to a place in the sea where you cannot see any piee of land and wait there for 5-15 minutes doing nothing. Go around and wait for a ping. Repeat.

That's what I've been doing. No pings. I've been trapping my villagers with holes made with the shovel so I can find them easily. But still I've had no luck.

Save and Quit and go back on. If you play too long without taking a break they don;t like talking to you.

To me, it also seemed like if your friendship with certain villagers is not that high, they are less likely to ping you.

Well I did make a new town nine days ago. XD

I'm having the same trouble. I've been pinged once o.o And I have fairly high friendship I think, and i talk to them when they don't talk to me in case :3

I've always had trouble with the diving trick, honestly I get tired of going into the water and sitting lol. I've gotten maybe 5 projects requested through this method throughout the many towns I've had. Haven't tried it in this town.

I've been doing the diving trick for 5 minutes each time. Muffy pinged me for a geyser after maybe 3 or so pointless pings from everyone else
