I've been trying to have a sort of "theme" for my town ever since I reset about a year or so ago. Truthfully, I haven't done very much yet, but I have been looking at paths a lot. I've decided that since I want my town to be like a quaint little forest, that dirt paths are the best ways to go. Except, I don't know how to do these.
How much time and wear and tear are required for grass to actually start to deteriorate?
Is it worth putting effort into actually making distinct dirt paths? Or should I let them occur naturally?

I would think to make a distinct path may take a lot of time and effort.
You can always use the QR machine at the able sisters and find some cool dirt paths online!

I would advise to avoid pure-dirt paths all together. Not online is it tedious to put in your town, but it is also tedious to maintain if you have a lot of path xD. Like misspiggy said, you could probably find a dirt pattern that would work for your town o;. If you're really wanting a dirt path though, you could place temporary patterns where you'd like the path and only run on those. When you remove the patterns after awhile, you should have a dirt path ^^.

I would do it while plot reset since you have to get the space for your character but once you delete it , you got that dirt xD

but preferably find some cute paths c:

You could do it naturally where you wear out the grass or try to create a design that's similar to dirt.

I basically found a 1- tile path qr code, then layer those down, planted flowers on either side, then walked along them every day for at least a month, especially when it rained. After I removed the tiles, I was left with a perfect dirt path. I walk along the paths every day to maintain them.

could you link me to that QR code?

I plan to make dirt paths as well since I don't like the look of the fake dirt QR paths. What I plan to do is similar to what Ceri suggested but instead, make a path surrounding by bushes/trees/flowers and then just let the dirt appear naturally.

Dirt paths are a little easier to make if you plant some bushes on either side to avoid "stepping outside the bounds." It's also a little easier if you let it occur naturally at the start before setting the bushes down. It takes a while for a complete distinct dirt path to happen, though. But it's up to you! I personally prefer this to setting down my own paths so that's what I'm doing. xD
