Yes, I have. It was on 9/22/2013. It was divine. Did you wait until it was super squishy? I've heard that unripe persimmons are unforgettably horrible.
(I started a sourdough culture on that day- I named it 'Percy', after that persimmon, since I was so delighted by how tasty it was.)
I dunno, my mom always had boxes full of it. Maybe they weren't ready but she ate them like that was the last food left on earth. And I always thought they were yukky.. They tasted so... bitter...
I have around 25 persimmon trees in my backyard and everyone in my family eats them but they look so yuk and squishy i can't bring myself to try one x.x
Never tried one, but one of my co-workers eats them every now and then and says they're quite yummy. I'm not sure whether I believe her or not; I'll only know when I try for myself. ^-^
Haha these replies are pretty interesting. I've probably eaten more persimmons than oranges and pears. They were pretty common place growing up and I loved eating hoshigaki (dried persimmon) during certain holidays.
Dried persimmon looks rather unappetizing but its actually quite good.
okay there are 2 kinda, Hachiha and Fuyu. ive had both. and all i can say is that both dried out my mouth. it wasnt an allergic reaction dry mouth but yeah sort of like instant cotton mouth.
There's the "flatter" kind that looks like a tomato. And there's a "longer" kind that kind of looks like a bell pepper.
The "tomato" type you can eat when unripened or ripened - both ways are delicious. I personally prefer unripened because it's less sweet and crunchy. Usually these are peeled before eating.
However, the "bell pepper" kind you should eat only when ripened. When eaten unripened, it will taste bitter and feel very dry in your mouth. You can choose to peel these before eating, or eat as-is.
I have family friends who own 25 acres of land and grow a different type of fruit every few summers. Last summer was persimmons!
