Did 1.2.1 Fix Villager Friendship Glitches? UPDATE: It did not.

If I remember correctly, the official guidebook said that writing letters to your villagers should increase friendship, but on release, dataminers found that this wasn’t true. I don’t have a way of testing this myself, but does anyone happen to know if this has been fixed? I would love to start writing my villagers letters again, but I don’t want my efforts to be for nothing!

(I think there was also a rumor that talking to your villagers on consecutive days earns a friendship point multiplier/boost, but I can’t remember if that was official or just talk.)

I was really sad when I found out about the glitch. I made a point to write to two villagers each day and although I enjoyed the responses, I was disappointed when I found out it did not have friendship functionality.

Now I know I shouldn't always expect an award for everything I do in a video-game but...hey! if some sent me a letter in real life you can bet your bottom dollar my friendship points are going to go up with them!

Also was it ever confirmed if gifts in letters don't increase friendship points as well?

There haven't been any updates to the datamined friendship mechanics doc. So I'm not sure if the dataminers are looking into it/planning to look into it.

Based on the doc, it looks like the companion guide also claims that talking to villagers on consecutive days is supposed to add a multiplier, but it currently doesn't. But that itself is probably a bug in the same vein as the letter bug.

That official guidebook was wrong or misleading on a lot of things.

You can test your friendship by building bridges/inclines. The amount donated by villagers each day is your total friendship score for the island.

*DO NOT INTERACT WITH VILLAGERS DURING THIS PROCESS*
1) Build a bridge/incline, but don't pay for it
2) Wait a day
3) Write down the amount donated
4) Send a letter (works with any interaction for friendship testing)
5) Wait a day
6) Write down the amount donated, subtract the difference
7) See if the values were the same or different
8) If different, congrats what you did affected friendship!

Update: Just tried building a ramp and sending a letter, and unfortunately there was no change in the amount donated. So, 1.2.1 did NOT fix villagers not gaining friendship points from letters.
Thanks for the help, everyone! I’ll update the thread title to include this.
(I’m kinda bummed that Nintendo worked so fast to patch the duping glitches but not the villager frienship ones... ;~; )

If you have a USB-A keyboard and are playing docked, you can actually hook up your keyboard to the Switch dock, and that will let you type on the physical keyboard! Makes writing letters much easier, and can also be used to type out messages in the in-game chat. This works on the system level, so if you hate keying in passwords when using the eShop, it also works there as well. Only thing is that I'm pretty sure you need a full-sized keyboard (with a num pad); I couldn't get any of my tenkeyless keyboards to work correctly.

Man I’m kinda disappointed that nothing changed in the latest update.... I know the guidebook is full of inaccuracies anyway but letters at least should affect friendship, they did before and I couldn’t see NH taking that away so I feel like it’s a glitch It’s sad, I like writing them letters (I use a USB keyboard!) but it feels pointless right now.

I only play in handheld mode so sadly I can't do this (or I guess I can, but I don't want to twitch to tv just for letter haha). I with the nintendo online app let you use its keyboard outside of chat too
