I just reset my town because I had had it since the release date. I had not accomplished much in it design wise it didn't look very nice. But in my new town I was wondering how do you even start designing (paths, bushes, etc)? Whats the first step in the process?

well to get any paths, unless you plan on designing them yourself, your going to have to unlock the sewing machine :)

Paths you can either find good QR codes of or try to make your own paths. I personally tend to use QR Code ones at first but eventually I make my own. They aren't quite as good or detailed as the QR Code ones but they still look nice, and it feels really good to say "thanks I made these" when someone says they like your paths. ^.^

Once you unlock the sewing (QR) machine from Sable you can save design patterns to use as paths, wallpaper etc.

You can find QR codes on the internet. I saved all mine on Pinterest so I had them all in one place. It came in very handy while I was looking for ideas, and I could go back to it without having to search for a particular QR code every time.

Since you had your first town since release, I'm sure you know about unlocking the sewing machine. -cough- Other comments. -cough- xD

With a fresh town, I would say to start by deciding where those permanent PWPs will go in the future. Remember to leave room for landscaping. And if you want to remodel a bridge, remember that demolishing them is easy, but having the space to put them back could be a pain. After that, you can walk around and see how paths would cross your town. You might want to start with the more important buildings--Re-Tail, train station, plaza, Town Hall, etc--then see if you want paths to villagers houses. My most important tip is that the most direct path isn't always the best for your town.

People are all talking about literal designing patterns and I just wanna talk about layout.

First get your themes situated and what you want your town to be about. Decide what you expect in your town's geographical features. Do a good name for it and for your mayor. About everything you do in your town should be done with your theme in mind.

After deciding where to put Mayor's house, probably the first thing you should do in a town is figure out where you want your main road/pathway to go. Start with the important places and work out the best ways to get from one to another. Cut down any trees and get rid of any villagers in the way of your ideal path. Finish laying your path and you can then move on to either making your own path designs or getting the sewing machine and finding some on Tumblr.
Next you get to worry about where to put your perma PWPs, and whether you even want some of them. Again, remove unnecessary obstacles in the way of the places you wanna put them.
Then, work on where you want your villagers to go, and who you want your villagers to be. Get your dreamies and plot reset and all that.
After that's settled, you can work on the normal PWPs and which ones best go with the theme you're portraying in your town. Decide where they would best go. Get your nature stuff out and start planting.
While you do this, work on the things you want your house(s) to represent, and whether you want or can fit multiple playable characters in your town.

At least, this is how I would properly do it. I'm kind of in the process of making a guide of my own. Not trying to be bossy, just giving advice on where to start :)

i search for a town map i like and know i can do tons of things with right off the bat. from there i create a second character, lay down paths ((i just use black and white as place holders, you can worry about the QRs later lmao)) and i decide where i want stuff.
villagers aren't a huge deal because you can move them out if you don't like them. plus since you can plot reset when you get them, i just choose general areas for where they should put their houses and then plot reset.
uh one tip you should learn is to focus on one piece at a time though. like i usually look at the entire town and then it's a mess, but if you just focus on certain areas and then complete them and move on, you might like it better? idk, your choice though.
good luck with your new town!

What I usually do is get rid of all the trees and move flowers either to one corner of town or onto the beaches. I plant trees in a line alone the train tracks (one space in between trees and away from tracks) so my town isn't totally barren cause it bothers me, and I like the look of that, but then I usually lay down my general idea of how I want paths to go from building to building, around houses and I kind of get an image of how I want things like where I want PWPs to go or dreamie houses or whatever and once I get my paths laid down how I want them and decide positions for houses/PWPs I start landscaping. Basically through the first process I just hoard as many bush starts as I can (it helps if you have that far of an upgrade to your shops) and then I plant bushes and trees to however I see fit for the area and I like to come up with flower schemes as well, but not everyone does. I like the look of coordinated flowers better than just having flowers planted all willy-nilly. That's my method at least. Some people say get all your dreamies first, but considering my main town still doesn't have all its dreamies and I've had it since launch, I see that as a load of bull. I just leave a spot open for where I want villagers to go and plot reset them. It's actually easier to plot reset when your town is decorated and you have PWPs laid out because you can block off areas you don't want them to plot with PWPs.
