100% agree. Aside from the breakable tools, this is probably my personal biggest issue with NH. If the most effective way for us to get our hands on different furniture variants is by hoping and praying we get them from balloons or the random tree furniture on mystery islands...there's definitely a problem with the system, especially for those who don't have any people to be able to trade with.

I agree! I think one of my first posts on this forum was complaining about how Nintendo put way too much focus on the people willing to get Nintendo Online, to the point where your experience is so much worse without it. Even if it's not as pricey as other companies it just seemed kind of rude to me. There are lots of people who want to just collect furniture and decorate how they like on their own without wanting to constantly rely on random people, like how the previous games were. And that's just colour variants. There are other things you can't do now without the subscription. Like it makes me feel bad for younger kids who might not have permission or people who actually can't afford it, or have bad WIFi or whatever it could be, I mean I don't think they made it clear enough how much you'd miss out on without it honestly.

Also people have said there's balloons and Redd and villagers to get variations but really, you can't rely on that. Almost every variant I wanted I've never gotten from the game. I personally am fine without the sub (me and my irl friend help each other out) which I'm glad about since I'd feel disingenuous supporting a practice that I feel is icky lol. I know Nintendo's a business but I really am surprised that they don't even try to hide their greed with this stuff...

Anyway I hope they eventually allow people a way to get all the locked stuff themselves. It could be a good opportunity to bring back Reese and Cyrus for more than just their wedding anniversary. Or maybe they can introduce cans of paint so we could customise them ourselves. But it's weird how we can automatically change the colour of some things but not others.

THIS! serisouly! I like playing online but i really hate it when I'm forced to play with other people. At least everyone's is nice here :)

Absolutely this! I have Nintendo Online, but I really don't enjoy playing AC games with other people if they aren't directly right beside me. The time it takes to type everything out even on Nook Link is annoying and it's awkward. I also feel like it would be rude of me to just come by shop at their stores then leave.

We can use customization kits on somethings so why can't we use them on other stuff to get whatever color variant we want? I guess it was to encourage people to buy the Nintendo Online which makes sense, but it's so crappy to me like we paid for the game which is already an incomplete game so why do we need to buy anything else?

I love the game in general and I have A LOT of fun playing it but they've done a lot in NH and PC that just seems so scummy and gross from Nintendo.

They should have at least added an auction/trading house, or made multiplayer more fun with a games island or meetup place to make better use of Nintendo Online.

I would keep Online regardless, because I like the dreamsuite, sending letters, and use it for other games, but it's not really fair to those without.

I think the idea is really good, but could use some little tweaks to improve it. I actually like that balloons have so much on them and makes them an active mechanic, and hunting for different variations with Wisp and the tree drops is part of my dailies (when Wisp visits of course).

For non-online options, they should implement a rotation system. Maybe not each week/month (so the things mentioned above don't lose their usefulness) but if the color variant of your shop changed with the seasons, you would have many more colors available easier. For some it would also "artificially" increase a bit the number of things to do, as you can keep checking the shop more times.

For online-related options, they could implement a "shop" that can only be accessed via Dreams. Each of us would be able to set up, say, 10 items when we upload a dream, and anyone that visits it can purchase them and bring them back from the dream. That way you could skip most online interactions and still "trade" for variations.

For reference, the amount of items that have color variations is around 370 (of 1142 total items). Customisable items are around 383, so they are pretty much on the same level. Some of them also overlap, like the Laptop coming on different colors but being able to customise the screen.

I'm pretty sure that this has been a thing since the original Animal Crossing. The only difference is that, instead of having different colors, it was that specific pieces of each set appeared in different towns, with there being 3 different "loot tables" for shops.

I agree , I wish they didn’t color lock. We are on deserted island trying to build it from scratch. We have the kits to customize furniture. We should be able to customize furniture ourselves. I know they want to encourage trading and online subscription but people would be trading without color locking. With the nook miles it would’ve better if you only had to trade once and after that you could get it yourself. The people on here are amazing and so helpful when it comes to trading. My problem is always time. I don’t have a lot of time to play a s trying to set up times is such a pain. I feel bad if I have to make someone wait. Not everyone wants to play online on can play online.

Same. It reduces my desire to log in every day to clear out Nook's Cranny because I know I'll never see the color I want. Compared to New Leaf, where I logged in every day to buy any new item I didn't have even if I didn't want it, because completing the catalog that way was a realistic goal.

Yeah, I'm not a fan off items been colour locked, while I have Nintendo Online and have had no problems cataloguing/buying/trading different variations from very helpful people I still think having it coloured locked is unfair for those who don't enjoy or aren't able to play online. There are fortunately some others way to obtain items not sold in your islands shops as has already been mentioned but this would be very time consuming and difficult to obtain everything, especially considering the amount of repeated items that come from shaking trees
and the fact Redd doesn't turn up a lot. It's also made more annoying by the fact the game doesn't have a huge range of furniture sets so it is then limited further if people are unable to collect more colour variations, it would just be a lot easier and give people a greater choice on decorating if items weren't colour locked on islands or if all items could just be customised.

Yes I dislike that very much. I know Nintendo do this to encourage trading but what about the people who can’t afford/don’t want to buy the online membership? The game content is hugely discounted for these players since the game relies so much on trading..

I loathe this whole variants thing.

We need more variety of furniture.

In NL, we just had the one item we could customize in many different ways.
We could even use shirts.

Now we have this artificially inflated NH item list, and it's just different colors of the same old thing, and are forced to BUY a nintendo online subscription just to use our own data to trade for the variants of an already (IMO) ugly item(s).

I hear others claim that Nintendo's reason behind this is to justify online and paying for it. Which sure I can understand, but you'd think they would had gotten the dream suite sooner and hopefully mini-games around sometime if this were the case.

This also made me realize something about Nintendo as of late. Nintendo asks people to download an app to their phone to communicate on Splatoon. Instead of it being a feature on the game. They're relying on outside sources for their game. In the same way that New Horizon is using outside sources.

Like we all have this forum that we connect to (and other places) to set up trades. Nintendo isn't involved in any of this. I feel like they could've had some kind of feature in the game/Nook phone which could be used for trades. I mean yeah I just thought of that feature off the top of my head, so sure it's flawed and you could pick it apart, but it's more than Nintendo/NH bothered to do.

And yeah you can say that trading and connecting were the same in the other games, but a lot of the content wasn't locked behind island profiles like they are now. The game has given us so much freedom while also taking it away.

I mean exclusives per file have always existed, and so long as the series puts a focus on the social elements, that isn't gonna go away

and tbh, I'd rather it be color/design locked like now vs item locked like it was before

Well I loathe online interaction, and can't stand the fact I have to pay for a subscription to take part in something I detest!

I bought AC back in 2005, and it has always been a solo game for me.
The way I like it.

I have no interest in running around and playing on other people's islands.

I also wish they'd get rid of that damned phone!

Yeah, I'm not a big fan of it either, especially in regards to the Nook Miles variants. I want brown outdoor lights but since I don't have them, I'm going to have to go through the hassle of finding someone who's willing to trade/sell them and it's time consuming.

I've also just finished collecting all the furniture variants but it was only possible via trading/buying on this forum. Otherwise it would've probably taken me years to collect them all.

I just noticed these posts, do you mean past AC games had some furniture not available on your town? Where they only "locked" on your shop but available through balloons or other characters like the color variations on NH? Or were the items only available through trading with others? Apologies, I never heard someone mention this before.

If I remember correctly, the item pool was broken into 3 parts. One pool was the "common" pool that you frequently saw, one pool was the "rare" pool that you infrequently saw, and the third pool was the "out of town" pool that you needed to get from other people (or Redd). Each town had a different combination of the three pools, encouraging people to visit each other.
