I was planning on keeping mine empty until we got more furniture since I too don’t like a whole ton of the furniture or the furniture that I like, would kinda look out of place with my ideas (like the frozen set). Since and a bit before the fair started, I’ve been messing around at Harv’s island and actually came up with some ideas, so my plan changed for the time being. I am kinda having some doubts thought about my designs though, but that’s a story for another place and time.

In spite of my plans changing, I totally see where you’re coming from. My frustration in addition to the lack of furniture is the room size. It’s kinda hard to plan out my rooms and not order too much furniture when the room size in the house is different from Harv’s studio. It is a huge disappointment too when I come back from the studio after coming up with a nice idea, to find out I don’t have a good chunk of the space that I had in the studio, thus I have to leave a good deal of furniture out of my design.

I am enjoying decorating, but not as fun as I would be with a wider choice of furniture or bigger room size. Right now, I’m trying to make do with what we have for the time being and try to improvise as best as I can.

Kinda feel similarly. I had the same main room layout in my house of just junk thrown around since launch until just a few days ago (went with Mermaid theme, since I already had Antique in my basement) because it's hard for me to come up with nice interiors when New Horizons is missing nearly all the furniture themes I like. It's a shame, because it's very convenient to decorate now thanks to carrying over the Happy Home Designer improvements, but now it's like there's nothing TO decorate WITH lol. Not having staples like Blue, Green, Rococo (I miss this one the most ), Modern... the list goes on. Hopefully we keep getting new stuff over time to help with this issue, but it's unfortunate regardless that so much variety in furniture isn't present from the get-go in New Horizons when New Leaf added so many great new themes in the base game.

I love decorating but I HATE working towards house expansions because of how they become exponentially more expensive. I do feel pretty indecisive about what to do with all the rooms, I've got ideas for a couple of them and wouldn't have expanded my house if I didn't want more exterior options :P

I think decorating is less fun in NH than in NL, though, because the furniture is a lot more limited. I'm hoping updates will make it more fun.

I like making it look cool. But at this point my house is nothing but storage, and a target for the HHA to bully lmao

Oh oof I feel you on a certain level. The thought of decorating my house (and my island in general if I'm being honest) is just so tedious. When I get around to it and have an idea in my head it usually isn't so bad, but coming up with ideas is so hard and I'm just so lazy in that aspect of the game. Atm I only have two rooms decorated but they're just stuff I plopped down, and definitely not the way I'm keeping either room. In New Leaf my house was in the same sort of state, and I'm 100% serious when I say that it took me literally five years to finally decorate my NL house, and I never quite finished it because I kept tweaking rooms/moving those designs to my alt accounts' houses. :') I wouldn't be surprised if the same thing happened with NH lol, I'm such a mess. 😔

I have all the house expansions... but my home is totally empty, and has been since I got the game in March. I'm not a big fan of decorating interiors in games at all, but at the same time I spent a lot of bells on expanding my home for the sake of completionism, and I'd like to at least put some stuff in it. None of the furniture really appeals to me at all, and I don't have any intriguing ideas either. :(
Omg I thought I was the only one haha my house is upgraded too but I don't have much furniture at all. I play with a friend that has her house fully decked out and when she comes over to my island she always comments saying its a work in progress :/ But my Island is decked out and hers isn't cause she spends time decorating her house haha

To all who have trouble decorating: Don't let your anxiety prevent you from doing it, and just give it a try however you see fit.

Remember that nothing is ever permanent: You can put things in however spots you like, however odd the combinations may be. I like to just put one thing here, another there, switch positions around, use stuff I get very recently on a whim. I tended to just use what I got at first when all my bells were for expansions, but once I got enough bells and had little to spend them on, I splurged on customization kits and the shop catalog to upgrade my designs even more.

Lastly, decorating isn't a competition in this game: The only critic should ever be yourself. Be lenient about your designs at first - You begin with limits to what you can do. Maybe go with the Bob Ross mentality... A happy little chair here, paired with a happy little table... and in the end, you'll end up with something you'll like.

And when all else fails, there is always Harvey's Island to pre-plan things.

I wouldnt say I hate it, but I have been putting it off, for sure. I'm not fully upgraded yet because I only have two rooms decorated out of the 4 I have now. We do need more furniture...

There isn't enough decent furniture to decorate with.

It's sad seeing pics where everyone basically has the same stuff, only in different positions.

It's hard to be unique when this game lacks the very thing it boasts having - OPTIONS. (items)

I don't necessarily hate decorating inside my house but I do always leave it until the end. I have most of my rooms decorated a bit but haven't really put in much effort. I feel like I still need more furniture items to decorate it how I would like so it may be a while until I am happy with it.

Yes this too! I have noticed there's a serious lack of furniture items especially tables and furniture sets. I was hoping we would get many of the new leaf ones plus many new ones and I also feel like pocket camp has better items than new horizons.

Oh, I love putting my house together. I've looked online for ideas and combined those with my own thoughts on colors, placement, and style.

My first floor rooms are pretty much set, although I'm tweaking the main room with seasonal touches. I completely redid my upstairs for fall and I'm in the process of redoing the basement.

If only decorating my IRL house was as easy!

It would (and hopefully will soon) be fun to get new furniture options in the future. Though for me when I was new to the game, and also new to the entire AC world sometimes having less options was good, because it can be overwhelming in a blank slate situation like this. Like originally I think I had one red imperial dresser that I got from a balloon, so I just built my first room around what looked good with that.

when something seems intimidating sometimes narrowing the options can take some of the pressure off, so maybe choose some aribitrary color or item and just put stuff in to fit with that one thing. Like other people said, nothing is set in stone, you can move stuff around etc, forever until you like it.

the other thing is, just put together a room with a matched set, why not? You don’t have to start out making something amazing. Put some furniture together and live with it for a while.

or make the ugliest/ craziest/ creepiest room you can, sometimes that can be really freeing too.

I admit, my experience of the furniture thing is different, I didn’t play the other games so all the furniture is new to me and I don’t notice a lack - acnh is my baseline (and all the updates are totally new content for me). [sorry! I feel weirdly guilty for feeling like this]

But I think you can make something you like, if you take some of the pressure off, and just experiment.

I love decorating my rooms. I have alt characters so I have more rooms to decorate. I do feel like we had more options in New Leaf, and it was easier for me to get creative. I'm having a harder time in New Horizons.

I do like that New Horizons seems to have more items to decorate the walls. I love that we can place villager pictures on them too.

It isn't that I hate decorating my house or dislike the furniture, I just feel really overwhelmed by house decoration. 😅 There are so many cute items and I have many ideas for how I want the inside of my house to look, but actually getting started with it seems rather daunting. I don't know where to start! So for now I just use my rooms as extra storage, haha.

I really just need to sit down one night and put my mind to working on a room.

I like decorating, but wish we could choose room size and door placements. Diys/storage are still taking up my basement and 2nd floor.

Designing on Harv's island is more fun because you have everything on hand. I'm really lazy about ordering furniture and have serious inventory space issues.

I love decorating my house but I agree with @cocoacat that I wish we can change the room sizes!

I do miss some of the missing furniture sets that I used in NL (rococo, sweets, princess, Sanrio) for decorating since they made the rooms more interesting

No need to apologize for not noticing the lack of furniture of content because you didn’t play the past games. That’s understandable :). I actually kinda wish I didn’t start playing with such high expectations or have some ideas ahead of time, since then I would have probably tried more to work with the furniture that I got as I obtained it, instead of waiting for some better updates (though the fair/harv’s studio helped me come up with some ideas to work with for the time being and maybe keep 🙂).

I love decorating my house. One of the main reasons I made a second characters was so I would have another house to decorate. I have way too many ideas for room designs and not enough rooms to actually implement them.
