I'm aiming for gothic horror meets woodland. Just started working on trees now but I find the trick is to find an empty space and plant them in a couple rows. They need more space to grow than they do once mature. Then I move them to where I want them as I'm placing buildings down.

Lots and lots of pine trees!! That's what I picture when I hear forest. Like really close together. Maybe short one square width dirt paths to keep things organized? Instead of flowers around paths, make them really tight together pine trees to fill in gaps too.

You can get different size pine trees if you let them grow a bit and move them before they are fully grown to a spot that wont let them grow anymore. They just won't drop any items, money, wasp, or the pine cones and ornaments in the fall and winter

A really dense one? I'm trying to make a gothic forest town (island, whatever) that feels like a real forest, but I'm having trouble making it a forest but also organized and not a total mess. Any tips?
Oh man deep woods are my JAM! I’ve got about half of my territory on my current island as a forest, and I’m planning on having a good 2/3 of my new island as pure-on wilderness.

what I’d suggest is:

for deeper forest areas, break up the grass with dark dirt (and possibly a pine needle pattern).

Vary the types of trees in any part of your woods. All old-growth forests have a wide variety of trees.

Use bushes (vary them too). Undergrowth is essential. In fact: use all sorts of greenery! Weeds, flowers, whatever! Variety is your friend in the woods.

For a rugged look, scatter the various types of garden rocks around your forest.

Wild. Log. Benches. They are a keystone. You can customize them to look like trees that don’t exist as a live form. I’d suggest pairing it with the log stool (or tree stump if you use the base design).

Speaking of tree stumps, leave a couple around. They add flavor.

Leaf piles are always a lovely addition; same with the mush set (these can get a bit pricey).

If ya want music, the cured bamboo speaker blends right in!

Try to scatter everything relatively close to each other. You want everything to be dense. TBH my current woods are a bit sparse for my liking (but it allows my parents mobility when they play). The woods are not open spaces: it’s not exactly for the claustrophobe.

Okay, I think that’s it. I just LOVE the wilderness aesthetic. That’s partially why I want to go my own way with a new island. I wish you well in your endeavors!

ps: I have a few woodsy patterns available.

My island is mostly woodland. It's not supposed to look organised, so I use 'the path' to allow for a more organic look and try to avoid straight paths as much as possible - even placing a tree in the middle and forking the path either side of it can really help with this.

I plant flowers or shrubs at the base of most trees and use weeds fairly liberally. Then it's a case of filling space without making your island hard to move around. Well-placed log stakes, wild log benches etc... can do wonders for an area!

It's also good to have some clearings which don't have too many trees so that you can try out different design ideas and break up your island a little.

I do agree with keeping some areas open; I’m planning on using the entire starter area as a “visitor center” of sorts. I’m also going to have my villagers all live on the starting area, too.

I have a lot of dense foresty areas in my town. I use pine trees, hardwood trees, and bamboo trees close together, and I layer them very compactly. I use the stone path and a custom pattern with stone interspersed with weeds and the default 4 leaf clover pattern a LOT! I also use a lot of shrubs as well of various types because they all have different leaf textures. I'm starting to play more around with various stages of tree growth, but what frustrates me about them is that they actually have the same spacing requirements of regular trees, so it doesn't end up looking at dense. My island is 5 stars and has no issues with too many trees, because I have areas with open space nestled between dense forests. I lot of my island is covered with water too.

one thing you could try is making "paths" through use of cliffs and valleys to lead people around rather than (or as well as) the default paths themselves!! if that makes sense. little inaccessible areas filled with trees like that also feels really cool and mysterious to me, especially if they're overgrown with weeds and dark flowers and have various statues and mossy stone items on them. good luck with it!

I have a decent chunk of my island devoted to a haunted forest! This pic is a bit older as I now use the natural path. I like to mix up the tree types to maintain density while still having some variety to look at. Monsters, ghosts, bug models, etc are hidden throughout so it’s fun to explore (the villagers seem to think so too)

After completely surrounding my campsite with pine trees to make it look like the Glimwood Tangle forest, I kind of want to make my whole island themed after it now lol. I find it's such a cool idea to make use of and not too many people that i've seen have done it. Would definitely help someone like me to decorate more, since that way I don't have to worry about the loads of empty spaces on my island, because I can just fill that with trees :^). Plus it would look really pretty in cherry blossom season, or when the leaves on the trees start to change colour, as they would be a very nice contrast between the darker colour of the pine trees. I do worry if it would start to get a bit annoying trying to traverse my island with all of the trees everywhere though, not to mention all of the accidental tree shaking I would do. That already gets on my nerves as it is because of joycon drift and just me being generally clumsy, so I could see myself doing it all the time and receiving multiple wasp stings on the daily :/.

my town has a few forest areas! My campsite and picnic area are near redd's so I decided to make a forest for it! My entrance also has a forest that leads to plaza, orchard, and enchanted area (still a WIP) and placing trees in a way that seems filling is hard so iv been adding things like hyacinth lamps, bushes, and stone tablets all around!

I have foresty parts on my island as well. What I found most effective is using mostly pine trees instead of the normal ones. The fall seasonal items help a lot as well! Then fill every spot you don't intend to walk on with bushes, weeds and the flowers of your choice (green mums are nice and neutral but most of them work!)

My goal is usually to block out as much of the ground and sky as I can without hindering gameplay. It makes it feel more dense than it really is. Cliffs can really help with that a lot (see the bottom picture).
