This happens to me. I was looking today and came across Norma on an island who I thought was really cute but then I snapped out of it. I'm glad I didn't take her because Poppy ended up moving in instead and she's one of my dreamies!

My villagers are far from the dreamies I imagined in the beginning but I'm happy to discover new characters too.
I was searching for Zucker, Audie and Coco the first time I did Island hopping, I took Tucker, Flora and Caroline.
The second time I was searching for Cyd, Kabuki, Coco and Tiffany and I took Audie.
And the third time I was still looking for Cyd, Kabuki, Coco and Tiffany and I took Kiki !
One of my plot has been taken randomly by Elvis because of a canceled transaction sadly... I managed to get Cyd from someone but too late so I opened a new plot.
I have only one house remaining that I can place on my island, so I'm planning on a new island hopping trip as soon I have stocked some NMTs.

I probably got 30+ dreamies, I don't look for specific ones, I just want one of the ones with a personality I'm missing.
I always try villagers out. If I don't like them, I'll just wait for them to move, no big deal. I have my dreamies amiibo cards so I'm fine to play around with other villagers. I'm glad I have this outlook because I fell in love with Puddles and intend to keep her.

Yes but I got rather popular villagers, like Audie, Julian, and Zucker. Still waiting to sell/trade Audie and Julian but I let Zucker go. A bit of a waste, though it was funny seeing the moonlight shine off of his shiny head lmao

I believe this has been answered already above. If you’re okay with TT, I vouch for this method. It’s also dependent on RNG and luck but I found this to have more favorable results than island hopping especially if you’re looking for ONE specific villager of a personality you currently don’t have.
