Im not a big fan of him either, but if you ask me he has a very cliche "smug anime guy" design that usually does pretty well in popularity in anime character rankings. Raymond being so insanely popular kindave falls in line with that hypothesis as well.

Also both being relatively monochromatic / neutral colors makes them fit into most town aesthetics really easily as well.

I had him in New Leaf and liked him because he was smol and sassy, but now in New Horizons I think I grew more attached to him because he sings literally all day long LOL. It's so endearing!

He's my favourite villager, and has been since NL. Squirrels have always been my favourite villager species and I like his clean design and style the most, and the sulky face and attitude gives him something unique. He comes across more as a spoilt but well-meaning boy then arrogant like some of the other smugs. And in New Leaf, his house was a sloppy mess which to me added another level to his character I just find him so endearing, he'll always been a top pick for me!

I am freaked out bc he doesnt have a nose. I know other villagers also don't have noses, but I think it looks especially weird on him

I never really liked him, but he is stil my fave now purely because of lack of other viable options in his personality type. I don't understand why he is so popular overall. Squirrels are adorable though as a species.

i actually used to feel really ambivalent towards him and didn't get the hype at all bc i thought he looked really plain, but i got him as my forced campsite villager and fell in love with him! he's just really cute and tiny

I suppose what I like about him is that he manages to be cute looking (small, rosey cheeks, fluffy), yet also look grumpy. I can't really explain what I find endearing about small, grumpy things, but it makes my heart feel warm and I just want to hug him. Maybe in an attempt to get him to smile? I'm not sure! ^_^

edit: and raymond is actually still #1 by a longshot, at least according to the data I'm gathering for the tier list!

I'm still trying to figure this out myself. (Don't get me wrong, I think he's very cute.)

I personally think a big part of the appeal comes from the fact that he's a smug villager and that he seems to be the most universally "cute" (small proportions, light/pastel color scheme, wide eyes) one.

He sort of seems to be the most "Normal" (going with how cute the normal type is) of all of the smug characters (and of the male characters in general). Since (many) people tend to have at least one of each type, people with really cute villagers tend to gravitate towards him.

At least that's my interpretation of it.

i like squirrel characters in general, like filbert and sylvana. if you pair that with the fact that i'm not a fan of many smug villagers' designs, marshal is the perfect smug villager for me! he has a muted color palette, which is something i prefer in characters as well.

but uhh, to answer your question as to why he's popular, because he's cute I guess? I've had him a couple of times and couldn't complain. I wouldn't be able to tell you how he managed to smash the popularity charts in new leaf, leaving everyone swooning and worshipping at his feet but he's decent.
he kinda fits into any town I guess and I think people like the grumpiness of big ray and large marsh

he is! I don't want to spoil the update me and indo have coming for the tier list, and this could change between now and our update, but marshal is only the 4th most popular. raymond is still the #1 most popular!

I wasn‘t a fan of the hype of Marshall since New Leaf.
I wanted O’Hare as my smug for New Horizons but after using all my Nook Mile tickets and not finding any potential residents, the last island had Marshall. As I didn’t want to risk any random move in that I didn’t approve of, I decided to just let him move in as I thought he could be a decent short term villager. But tbh I have fell in love with him and I can see him being a resident for life haha. The squirrels weren’t my favourite animal but he has warmed up to me and I understand the hype now. His house is really nice too.

Marshal’s simple design and muted color palette makes him easy on the eyes and a good fit for practically any town theme. Him being a squirrel adds to his adorableness with his tiny body and big floofy tail. Also his default expression being a frown makes him all the more cuter when he smiles. My favorite smug by far. <3 His house is really nice too.

I felt the same way in New Leaf until he showed up in my campsite. I let him moved in because I was gonna sell him but he ended up staying permanently aha.

I like squirrel villagers, I briefly had Marshal in new leaf, but didn't keep him because I wanted Shep. I'm planning on having Marshal on my island when I can, he's a cute little grumpy marshmallow.
