Kojima presented the first trailer of his new game, Death Stranding, at the Sony conference. It confirms that Norman Reedus is still working with Kojima after the cancellation of the Silent Hills project.
The imagery in the trailer is bizarre, and it gives no real clue as to what type of game it is, though my closest guess would be a thriller/horror game. What is clear is that with the creative freedom given, this will possibly be Kojima's weirdest game yet.
After the short games montage at the end of Sony's presentation, the crowd could also be heard chanting "Kojima, Kojima, Kojima".
Geoff Keighley interviewed Kojima after the presentation, so there's a bit more info:
- Guillermo del Toro is not part of the team on this game
- While there are a bunch of game engines available, Kojima Productions has not decided on a final engine yet
- Ludens is only the mascot of Kojima Productions, and is not related to Death Stranding
- Kojima doesn't confirm any genre, but does say the game will have many action sequences, and that after a few hours of playing, players will start getting the sense that they're playing something that is very different from anything they've played before
- The location of the game is a secret
- Kojima doesn't want to say much more about the game, instead saying the teaser contains many hints and he wants people to theorize about the game using those hints
- No release date given, as "it will take some time"
To explain the title, Kojima says that when aquatic creatures strand while alive, it's called "live stranding, but it's called "death stranding" if they are already dead when they strand. Furthermore, in the game, something will come from another world and be stranded.
