I'm surprised there's no Darkest Dungeon thread here yet. Has anyone else bought it? I'm absolutely loving it so far and it's great to know that it's only freshly into early access and there's still plenty of fresh content coming. Any opinions on the game so far? Favorite class? Favorite team comp?

Oh also what do you think the rest of the planned classes will be like? Merchant sounds kind of weird to me and I hope they don't do one of those "sacrifice gold for damage" mechanics because I'm greedy and will never use the class no matter how good it is.

This isn't the forum for PC gamers so you really shouldn't be surprised. Unless if you wanna talk about crap like League.

But yeah, the game is awesome. I LOVE the gothic crowquill. I haven't had much time to play but man is the game difficult. Anyway played a bit, I was fortunate to have upgraded the Stage Coach Network immediately after arriving to the Hamlet. I can't stress enough to new players that your party members are disposable. At least they are at the lower levels of the game. That seems to be the biggest mental obstacle to new players. I'm reading a lot of people restarting after losing a guy or two, and at Level 0-2 that just seems like you'll be spinning your wheels and hating your experience.

My first Crusader, Reynauld, could only relieve stress through prayer. Then he apparently looked too deeply into an Armoire of Lovecraftian Despair and got the negative trait of only being able to relieve stress through flagellation. Well sorry Reynauld, I'm not going to spend 1500 gold so that you could possibly get better at the Sanitarium. He was eventually left at 100% stress before he hit level 2 and so I dismissed him as soon as I got another Crusader from the Stage Coach.

After a few hours I've only upgraded the Vestal's healing abilities. Everything else has gone into the Hamlet. I am starting to separate the wheat from the chaff so there are characters I'd rather keep alive for a while but so much more that don't matter so much.

I also like the touch that it's impossible to be left in a Game Over state. Just keep filling that graveyard and sending new recruits to the dungeons to rebuild your funds. Hopefully you invested in the Stage Coach Network. You can dig yourself out of any hole the game throws you in.

For the people who don't know, Darkest Dungeon is a rougelike RPG but what sets it apart from other rougelikes is that there is an affliction system. Psychological effects such as Fear, Depression, Paranoia, abusiveness, and some more I can't recall.

This game really has me interested. The artstyle is really great and I like the sound of the 'affliction system'. Also, permadeath is always fun :3

I'm always skeptical about early access though, so I'm split about whether or not I want to buy it just now. I think I may wait just a little longer for a few updates since from what I've seen it didn't look like there was currently enough content to justify ?15.

In my opinion there's plenty. I've sunk about 20 hours into the game so far, and while some of that was playing a different save file for an hour or so, most of that has been working towards finishing what content is there. So far I've done the first 6 bosses and have 3 left, but if you're a person that wants an hour of gameplay per dollar spent minimum there's more than enough here. It's all pretty polished.

Looks overhyped but I don't know, haven't tried it yet.

How can it be overhyped if there is no hype?

The game is awesome Tao. I do feel it abuses RNG too much though. Sometimes I have really easy runs through dungeons and other times they're horrible. The content is coming so if you wanna wait well wait but really, this is a fun game and buying it now wouldn't be a bad decision.

I wouldn't say its overhyped, but theres certainly plenty. Lots of developers have been talking about it, people stream it a lot, and I mean it got 3x it's goal on kickstarter. Defo hype.

I don't think the RNG is bad. It can hurt you early but once you reach level 3+ your characters scale significantly better than the enemies and you'll find yourself breezing through dungeons. They'll probably tone down the early stuff and ramp up the later stuff soon.

Ahhhh right. I was judging the length from the few videos I had seen and it looked to have less than an hour worth of content, but I've likely just misjudged that (or there's been more added since then).

Ah yeah certainly more than that! Probably just saw the mission screen or something and it makes it look like theres only a few levels, but its a roguelike so you don't just do each level once. :p

I love roguelikes, I love hard SRPGs, and I really like the affliction system. DD looks really interesting; it's been sitting in my wishlist basically ever since it came out.

One of my friends bought it; he's already got 37 hours on it, but when I asked about it, all he said was, "I wouldn't spend $20 on it."
Okay, no, you're right. I've only ever bought one game on Steam for $20 or more, but that wasn't what I was asking, lol.

Much like Tao, I'm a little hesitant to buy Early Access, especially at their full price. Although it does look like they're actually keeping up with it, there are just so many Early Access devs that just abandon an unfinished product, it's left a sour taste for me. :P

Also, I don't see the problem with a little RNG, as long as it's not PURE RNG like that one.. Hack, Slash, Loot. That was awful.

If it goes on sale I'll probably grab it, but my backlog is already so long to begin with.

Yeah I could see waiting for the sale, I'd just been closely following it for months and couldn't take any more waiting. Honestly, they could abandon it as it is now and, while I'd be disappointed, I would feel I had enough content to be worth the money. Although I'm not hard to please in that regard I guess.
