Coup Attempt in Turkey.

Part of the Turkish army tried to commit a coup last night. That means they wanted to take control of (at least part of) the country from Erdogan's government. Force was used on both sides, but government forces quickly gained the upper hand and suppressed the uprising.

The coup army's motive was that they feel Erdogan's government has smothered democracy in Turkey. The constitution states that Turkey needs to be a democratic state, so this was basically their attempt at enforcing the constitution.

This happened in a country where there's a lot of unrest. People are divided, with half of the country supporting Erdogan and the other half thinking he should leave. Under the regime a lot of freedoms have also been taken away, and there's a lot of criticism that Turkey hasn't done enough in the fight against terrorism, but instead has made it worse.

The support shown by other countries last night was to be expected. Turkey is a member of NATO, and a fairly important one at that. So even if politicians think Erdogan and his lackeys can go **** themselves, they say they support him because they don't want to lose an ally like that.

Then why is it that Erdogan sent a text to all Turkish people, telling them to fight for their democracy and their state? The coup army's motive is not what you hear on the news, it is what we Turkish people know. Those coup army's are G?len followers, they are basically connected to terrorists. Glen says he is muslim and an 'imam', but we know better.

And it's not half half. More than half support Erdogan, have you seen the amount of people supporting him on the streets?

There's also the conspiracy theory that Erdogan planned the coup.

I believe it.

I honestly think you're a bit delusional. What will he even gain from this?

He gains the ability to further crack down on civil rights. Erdogan is a "leader" who has put their own journalists on trial, harassed foreign journalists, and took over the largest independent newspaper in Turkey, Zaman. Before this take over, the newspaper was critical of Erdogan. Now? Very pro-government.

B?hmermann, a German comedian, read a poem on TV that made fun of Erdogan. Erdogan threw a fit like a little baby, and now the comedian is facing prosecution. Which was strange, because Merkel was initially defending the right to freedom of expression. Then Erdogan whined, and she stepped aside.

Erdogan has planned to criminalize adultery and create "alcohol-free zones".

It's clear to anyone that Erdogan is aiming to end democracy in Turkey and turn it into an Islamic dictatorship, led by him.

Furthermore, I highly doubt G?len is a terrorist. If there was ANY suspicion that G?len was actually a terrorist, there would be no way in hell the United States government would allow him to operate charter schools in this country. And the best part? No Turkish court has charged him with terrorist activity.

This is horrifying to watch unfold. We're watching the rise of a dictatorship.
We've been watching it growing for the past few years. It's really no surprise that Erdogan is taking this chance to increase his reach and crack down using false charges (again).

This might happen if hillary is president, she might try to become dictator!
Hillary and Trump are bad, but I doubt either of them would go this far.

You're like 12 or something, you clearly don't know how politics works. Nobody can become a dictator of America.

Agreed. It's just so fascinating to watch. This'll be in the history books for sure.

Especially because Erdoğan isn't even prime minister anymore, but he's still trying to keep a way to have power. Turkish presidents aren't the same as those in the United States and Turkey doesn't have the same checks and balances system.

I wouldn't be so sure about that. The Constitution isn't a weapon and neither Congress nor the Supreme Court have guns, planes, or tanks. If a president wanted to take total control, it would be up to the military to take sides and if most of the military sided with the president, then they absolutely could take a **** on the Constitution and impose a dictatorship. Of course, it would be extremely risky for a president to try that because if (s)he loses, (s)he probably gets killed. But it's not totally crazy to think it could happen.

Now you're going to make Jared think that it's plausible for Hillary to become a dictator great

a lot of people have died because of this, and i heard that he wants to reinforce death penalty?? is turkey going to turn into a dictator-led country?

For some reason Jared thinks hiding emails is more likely to make someone a dictator than wanting to build walls, deport people, waterboard people, make it easier to sue the press, and kill families of suspected terrorists.
