Connection issues? Is there a way of telling who's at fault?

This has definitely/probably been brought up before, but is there a way of telling if a connection error is on your end or your friend's...whose island you're traveling to? Or even vice versa? The connection error screen apparently occurs for both parties, so it's hard to determine.

Good question. In my case, I use a wired connection for my switch so if there's a connection issue I know it's the visitor

figure out when the issue started then the person that visited when it happened is probably the culprit

You can test your WiFi connection in your switch’s settings, but that’ll kick you off the internet I believe. I don’t think there’s anything similar in game :^(
