Stitches
Mary sat at the foot of her bed, you could hear a quiet pluck, pluck, pluck when standing outside the door. Let's go back three months... "It's my birthday in 1.....2..........3......................uhhhhhhhhhhhhh what comes after 3? Well, whatever that number is, that's how many months until my birthday!" screamed Bob- Mary's 3 year old brother, who was 7 years younger than Mary.
"Let me guess. You want lots more teddies for your birthday?" asked Mary.
"Nope! I want soft animals!" He replied.
"Hmnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn..." thought Mary, then an idea struck her. She could get material from the fabric store, buttons for eyes, YES! A patchwork teddy bears, made up of all his favourite colours!
But 1 month later, Bob died in a car crash. His parents died as well.
Mary hid in the attic, sewing. The police were searching the house for her. They wanted to take her to a Care Home. She didn't want to go. The local Child's home was a rough home. The kids who lived there mocked her. It was bad enough at school. She just couldn't imagine LIVING with them. That was her biggest nightmare. After 4 hours the police left. They had stopped searching for her. But, as soon as they left, her auntie arrived and came up to the attic.
"Mary. Poor little girly. The police are gone. I would let you live with me, but there is no room! And I doubt you'd want to live with your cousins!" the aunt said.
Mary sat there. She didn't react to her aunt. She just sat there clutching the material. Shortly after she spoke, the aunt left leaving a tray of food in the fridge.
Now we go back to where we started.
Mary was used to the quiet house by now. Even though Bob was dead, she still made the bear. She was just finishing the eyes, then once she had finished, she left the bear on her bed, and went down to cook dinner. But she did one very foolish thing. She left the paper wrapper on the chicken, then she needed to go to the toilet, she left the oven door OPEN.
The last thing she remembered was coming out the bathroom, and being greeted by ruby red, amber dancing flames. She breathed in too much smoke and fell to the floor.
She awoke, 4 days after the house burnt down, in hospital. "You're awake then?" said a nice looking nurse.
Mary sighed. Another nurse walked up and said "A few things were salvaged from the house. We fixed the bear for you. It isen't as good as you did it, but we tried our best!" She thrust a plump bear into Mary's arms. The bear was wearing a shirt, white with stars. The stitches weren't small, delicate or dainty. They were big, loopy and careless. Mary cuddled the bear close and whispered, "I'll call you Stitches."
I think that's at least 200 words! As you can tell, my dreamie is Stitches!
