I've just found my 2DS, and my NL game is still on it. I haven't played since about 2014, maybe '15 and I can't decide whether to start afresh or dive back into my old game. I'm thinking it might be a bit sad going into a neglected island, but it seems a shame to get rid of such an old island.

Anyone who's come back to the game, did you start again or carry on with your old island, and were you happy with that decision?

What holds me back from starting over is how far along I am in the game. If for example I have the Emporium, I have a fully upgraded house, I like my villagers. These are just some of the things I would consider before starting over.

I agree. Starting over has been the best decision. It’s really refreshing to experience everything in NL as if it were new.

Same thing happened with me, I don't think you'll regret starting new. It just feels really nice to play through the beginning of the game again

I honestly feel completely the opposite
I restarted my wild world town to get back into it and I have never regretted anything more. New things have no memories
I still have my launch new leaf town and I’ll never remove it

Maybe you could consider getting another copy of New Leaf if you can so you can have both your old town and a fresh start.

I still have my two NL towns that I check on periodically. I enjoy re-experiencing New Leaf but I don’t think I’d want to start completely over, just because it takes so long to earn back the Emporium etc. You can still find new ways to freshen up the experience without starting completely over I think! :)

This was exactly what I did back in 2018. I didn't have the heart to delete the old town, despite having no motivation to go back. After playing the new town for a while, I found the motivation to go back to the old town.

My old 3ds had New Leaf installed digitally when I got it - so when it broke, I couldn't just transfer it to my new one ( I forgot my NNID so I couldn't transfer data D: ). So I had to format my old 3ds and pray it wouldn't erase my New Leaf data. Of course, it erased the entire game lol. So I had to buy a whole new copy and start over. It's upsetting but slightly refreshing. I think I'll start enjoying it when I start earning badges again and filling my museum. I was 1 fish away from completing the museum in my old town :[

I've never deleted one of my original towns but I'm thinking about starting another town. Right now in my old town almost every square inch that doesn't have a path, tree, etc is covered in flowers because of the beautiful ordinance lol Plus I'd like to experience it again anew. The downside is that there was still things I never completed like the catalogue, the art collection, and all of the badges...

I'm thinking about picking up a used Japanese 3DS and copy of NL. Partly to experience the game in a different way but also the right solder button on my 3DS is broken so I can't take pictures...

I think it all depends on whether you want to start from the beginning or not. I came back to New Leaf in 2019 after 5 years of not playing and personally I decided to start fresh just to get the “full experience“ but if you like what you already had and don’t feel the need to start completely fresh then I would say carry on or maybe purchase another copy to start new! >u<

With New Leaf I feel like if you’re really on the fence about resetting your town picking up another copy of the game is a good idea! It’s not terribly expensive anymore as a Nintendo Select and you might be able to get it even cheaper used.

I have my main town that I reset once not too long after I stared when I realized my face was permanent lol and I hadn’t made the best building placement choices. Since then though I can’t see myself restarting because I’ve put so much effort into the town and I’ve collected a lot of stuff I don’t want to lose.

I do have a second copy of the game that I’m planning to start on January 1st! 🥰 I want to try and play it without time travelling & try to earn the gold tools and bells on my own.

I have too much attachment to my town to reset it, I worked so hard to get all the villagers I wanted and getting the ideal town that the thought of just letting my town go makes me so sad

I often like to start fresh if I have been away from my town for a long time since I can never remember what I was doing/what my goals for my town were when I come back. I also really enjoy beginning games again from the beginning, so that's probably also part of it. I started playing New Leaf again in September after New Horizons kind of lost its appeal for me, and I've really been enjoying living in my new town after resetting. I do kind of wish I still could go back to my very first town, but I haven't really missed any of the others I have reset over.
