coming back after playing new horizons

I have mixed opinions on New Horizons, but it sure added a lot of nice quality-of-life perks hahaha

It took a while to readjust to the graphics. When you're used to playing Animal Crossing in HD, going back to 240p can be jarring. I also never noticed how limited the town customization was until I returned. At least the music is as good as I remembered!

I didn’t play New Horizons for very long so I can’t remember what they changed about the controls. I must say though that like with Wild World, New Leaf’s system limited graphics haven’t aged well.

idk, I've been playing both of them (NL and NH) a lot recently and I wouldn't say the graphics have aged poorly. Like obviously NH is leagues better graphically, but I think NL's art direction still makes it a very pretty game for the system it's on. Obv this is all subjective but there's my two cents

Wild World on the other hand....... yeah that one's hard to defend

I think it’s fine for the system it’s on and being so early in the system’s lifespan. I feel like the only reason people don’t like the graphics so much is because the DS screen was quite pixelated. It would also explain why people are fine with the N64 port GameCube game, but target Wild World for graphics complaints.

The main reason I don’t like New Leaf’s graphics besides the art style is because the 3DS makes everything look shiny.

True, it was a pretty early DS game. And the graphics are def serviceable, I'm honestly sorta fond of them for nostalgia's sake haha. But the pixelization is for sure why they get so much flack.

Also that's fair, New Leaf does have a lot of glossiness. It only bothers me on the hair in certain lighting, I honestly like the shininess on the grass and stuff like that. But then again I've played so much New Leaf compared to the other games maybe I'm just too used to it. LOL

I absolutely understand your criticism. Personally though, I actually like New Leaf's art style quite a bit. I think the art style as a whole is nicer than NH's and I prefer the way the grass looks. In NH, it lacks detail and looks really flat (unless it is in the distance, then it looks nice as e.g. blades of grass are added). Still, the HD graphics look better and the wind effects looks really nice. I guess it's highly subjective whether you prefer the graphics of NL over NH or the other way around.

I'm obviously biased, but I think New Leaf's graphics look really nice, and I actually like the way they look more than New Horizon's graphics. NH looks more polished, but for some reason, the textures bother me. Furniture, characters, and even flowers just look cuter to me in New Leaf. I'm in love with 3DS graphics in general, though.

the new leaf graphics are totally fine in my opinion, it feels unfair to compare them to new horizons though LOL
there are definitely some rough textures here and there in new leaf, but i feel like a game that showed us how much better the graphics could've been if the games came out later in the 3ds' life is happy home designer! though it is an underrated game, the graphics are obviously better than in new leaf and really good for the 3ds standards imo

That's absolutely true. Happy Home Designer has another advantage: it doesn't have an "open world", everything is much more confined and thus easier to tweak in development to look as good as possible. But both games look quite nice for 3DS games.

Coming back to New Leaf after months of playing New Horizons was really refreshing :] I love the New Horizons graphics, but New Leaf has so much nostalgia in it. I remember falling asleep to the 1am track so many times. The villagers feel so much more real, too. New Horizons is great, but nothing will top New Leaf imo.
