Hey everyone! I've been playing the Animal Crossing franchise for about 5-6 years now, and I've noticed people like to add paths and such to make their town more modern/civilized. I love walking on the paths, but I also like the idea of being able to wander anywhere in my town without following a path. I'm also concerned with the wear and tear of the grass if I only tread over one area. Does anyone have any tips for someone who is new to making paths? Where do you get the paths? How long does it take for you to put them down?

Grass wear isn't half as severe as it was in City Folk. You can wander around without fear, you won't be punished for loading the game multiple times a day and/or with different characters, and you can time travel two weeks ahead to fully restore your town's grass instead of having to play every day for six months.

How much time path-laying takes depends on the path design (do you need to load another character who's holding the rest of your patterns?) and how many tiles you plan to cover.

Browsing tags on Tumblr is a good way to find new paths. You can also Google "Animal Crossing New Leaf paths" and you'll find websites devoted to custom designs... Picking them up from dream towns is another way. You could also make your own path.

oh i thought this was going to be a thread about improving Boston's infrastructure and bringing better services to the area

Sorta. I don't have patterned paths in my town yet, but I have a path outlined with flowers for the most part. I only have one part of town that doesn't really have a set path yet and I'm unsure of what to do with it.

You can find all sorts of patterns and designs on google though. People are so creative and they love to share.

look online for QR codes... I've gotten all of mine from online, you can get more natural paths or mix pathways with rural areas too! that would be a pretty sweet town!

I put flowers and bushes etc at the side and just have dirt paths.. although they haven't fully formed yet. I've never seen a town path that I really liked!

I used to have paths but I took them out. The way my villagers placed their houses made my paths look like the L.A. freeway system. Who wants that in their quiet little AC town?

You can just get some QR codes for some awesome paths. I made my own, took me several hours to tweak to get just right. If you spread out the path laying over several days, it doesn't take long at all.

I love paths! My town has a forest feel to it, and I went through a few different path patterns before I found the one I'm using now that I really like. The one that I have now it just a pretty simple stepping stone design, but it looks great with my village and it looks good as both a two space and one space wide path.

I have some dark wood planks and stepping stones in mine. And I didn't overdo it around buildings, plaza, train station to keep a more natural look. Although I do like some of the very intricate ones. My villagers' houses are scattered all around my town so it would look like a spagetti junction if I tried to lay paths to every corner of my town LOL.

i thought it was about the citizens of boston being uncivilized/bad drivers.

OP it helped me to think of my paths like roads. Plan out your "roads" to the most common locations first ex: your house to retail, to the town hall, etc
Then do the villagers houses last. plan out the way your paths goes first. you can always change the pattern later.
get a path that is 1 or 2 tiles wide max. Makes it a lot easier. all my paths are 2 tiles wide. works well.

Do you have any website you would recommend using to find paths? I know there is tumblr, but there are hundreds of different things and tags I'd have to scroll through to find what I'm looking for.

You can still wander around if you have paths (unless you've closed them off somehow) and I don't think grass wear is such a big issue in this game. You could also put paths in areas that you walk on a lot anyway and choose the routes that feel more natural to you. You don't have to have very neat and straight paths, there are diagonal paths and paths that blend in with the ground (like stepping stones). I put most of my paths in areas that I walk on a lot anyway and underneath the grass wear isn't that bad for the most part. When it is, I'm glad that I have paths because they hide the muddy patches.

Of course, there are people who don't use paths at all or use grass wear to make natural paths. It's really up to you, you don't have to put paths in your town if you don't like them, especially since there are lots of nice towns that don't use any paths.

I love the look of paths in other towns, but never seemed to like the way they work in mine. I use bushes, trees, and flowers to border mine and just let them become dirt paths. I've a pretty rural/rustic town, so that seems to work best.
