15 Items or Less = Self Checkout
15+ Items = Cashier

The Pavillions near me got rid of all their self check outs for some reason. They make fantastic sandwiches so I only get that and a drink. 2 items. I had to wait 20 minutes just to pay because they only had 3 lanes open and the person in front of me had 50 items.

I would've eaten that meal whilst waiting in line. God bless those people who let you go ahead of them when they have like 40 items and you only have 1 or 2.

Yeah, I hate it when the kiosk is like, "PLEASE PLACE ITEM IN BAGGING AREA!" and you place the item, but the kiosk still doesn't detect it, so you try removing it and placing it again, and then the kiosk starts barking, "PLEASE PLACE ITEM IN BAGGING AREA!" and you don't know what to do, and the kiosk keeps barking, "PLEASE PLACE ITEM IN BAGGING AREA" and you start becoming self-conscious because the kiosk is really loud and the cute girl at the kiosk next to you turns to see what's going on, and you start nervously tapping the Cancel button at the bottom corner of the screen to restart the whole transaction and just when you think the embarrassment is over, the machine blurts out, "PLEASE WAIT FOR ASSISTANCE!" and you start stand there feeling like an incompetent moron as a cashier comes over to reset the transaction and allow you to buy that sole Snickers bar you decided you were craving right before leaving the store.

This x 10000. The self checkout machines are really glitchy. Every time I used them, they had to call a cashier anyway. It's not worth the extra hassle.

Self-Checkout, especially when I am on a short break from work.

I prefer self-checkout, firstly because I just like to deal with my own items and get out as fast as possible, and secondly because I am a cashier, and know how annoying customers are, so I don't want to be an annoying customer lol

I have only used a self-check out one time and it was in another town, where I live it's too corrupt for them to trust people to pay for their items as is, so yeah. But the self check out was hard and year kept erroring and stuff so it was more stressful than just dealing with a cashier. But like FleshyBro said, if someone else can pay for the grocery or I can order the stuff online I much prefer not having to deal with anybody. =D

I prefer a cashier over self-checkout. Sure, it can be awkward with them looking over whatever you are buying, but I could never live with myself if I did self-checkout. Self-checkouts take away from people's jobs and their financial security. I feel better knowing I am helping the other person on the other side of the counter with their way of living than using self-checkout and taking away from their job.

I mighta seen a few self-checkouts in the busier parts of town, but where I live there are none nearby, so don't really get to use them. Even if I had access to a self-checkout I probably wouldn't use it, since it's just easier to let the cashier do it and cashiers around here don't really chat, so I can get away with just saying hi and thanks. I'd prob use a self-checkout if cashiers chatted though, since I'm pretty antisocial. I'd feel kind of guilty for replacing cashiers with a machine tho.

Also some of you mentioned cashiers bagging for you, What? Do cashiers really bag your stuff for you somewhere? Cuz here they don't.

A lot of you are saying that you prefer to do the self-checkout because you're either nervous or anxious about talking to a cashier. Is it the norm where you live to have a conversation with the cashier when you're checking out or is it okay to just say hi and bye? Have any of you ever had a bad experience, maybe a conversation that went bad? I recall going to an auto parts store a few weeks back and dealing with a cashier that was rather odd. He was friendly, but he would yell fanatically and kept wanting to stretch out the conversation that we were having while I was just trying to buy some parts and get out of there quickly. I don't mind talking to people, but I also don't like having unneeded or boring or awkward conversations. Do some of you avoid cashiers because you're shy or because you want to avoid chatty cashiers?
I loved having customers who didn't wanna talk, making small talk gets awfully boring and like very rarely do I actually want to know about a person's day. Honestly I think the whole culture behind make small talk is forced upon cashiers because of surveys. Get a bad one or enough unmemorable ones and it can really hurt them.

Cashier. Those self checkouts never work right and always screw up.
I was so excited when I learned there's plans for my store to get more.

Soooo... is anyone here a cashier as well? :p
Was! Hated it. Too much standing around. Also old people are weirdly cruel and looking to pick fights, especially when it involves ID.

Ikr???? and when they find out something is on sale they harass the **** out of you about it. x(

Lol I don't mind "small talk" with the cashiers, all they say it's like "this will be 5 bucks" and then say like "bye have a nice day". there is this lady down at the booze store though who keep asking if i bought vinyl records though.

also ye you must have real bad anxiety if you can't say hi to a cashier :v

I don't like having awkward conversation's with people who I don't know/ I don't know well.
So self-check from personal experience's. c:
